Do you know any, what would you think of a Greta or the parents who chose it?

Just came across the name and am now pondering it for DD2.

It's unusual and quite pretty I think' I might assume you had German or Swedish roots.

We are TTC so it is hypothetical.but I knew the name I wanted for dd since being young and literally have no second favourites. So, im trying to put names I spot and like (they are few and far netween) down in a note to refer back to.

I like strong female names that aren't 'ie' sounding or have soft nicknames. I was served in a bar by a Greta Grin and thought "I love ot and it fits the brief!" wjether dh will like it is another question.

Ive put it on the shortlist so I.dont forget about.it. Our other favourite.on the list is Pippa. Strangely we have no.Nordic.or German links.

I really like it. My gran's best friend was called Greta (pronounced GrEEta) but it wouldn't have worked for us as DH is from the west of Scotland and in Ayrshire a "greet" is a "whinge" or "crying" so his side of the family would take the meaning as "whinger". which would have been wholly appropriate for dd2's first few years

However the Germanic pronunciation GreTTa is much easier Grin

Great name. Makes me think of Garbo.

One of my friends here in Italy has the most beautiful one.

And it makes such a pleasant change from Giulia and Martina which is what every second girl is called at the mo'.

It is Gray-ta here.

GRET-a would be the pronounciation I would choose. like Etta but Greta.

Personally I'm not keen - I find it a bit harsh, and it reminds me of regret. I do like Pippa though.

Ooh I love it. It fits my brief too-I might just need to add it to my short list for DC1. Is it a variant of Margaret?

Not a fan.

Makes me picture a stern and stout elderly German woman who scowls a lot.

Greta is ok, but personally I prefer Gretel or Gretchen.

I hope not Blanket as DD1s name is a variant of Margaret!! if it is, I can in.no way put it on the list.

Mortified... It is a variant of Margaret I'm afraid to say....

You could just start calling dd1 Greta!

If it's any help mortified my Great Aunt was called Greta, short for Marguerite which is the French for Daisy (which was her mother's name).

I think it's lovely. Unusual, but not too "out there", and most people shouldn't struggle to spell it.

On one hard Garbo, on the other, my grandma's pal.

Sadly ruined for me by the only one I know being about 60 and with a face like a cats bum/like she's smoked 10,000 cigarettes too many (which she has) and her mouth is now stuck in that sucking shape!

Love it. Am like you in that I don't like overly 'girlie' names, and this is perfect - cute on a child but ages well, sounds sophisticated (Garbo/Scacchi connection) and feminine without being princessy. A work colleage of DP's has a sixth-month-old DD called Greta. Much prefer it to Pippa.

Ds would have been Greta if he'd been a girl. This time we are going for Hetty if dc3 is a girl. I don't think it is though, everything about my bump is screaming BOY!
