I need help! DS3 due in July. DS1 is Barnaby, DS2 is Rory. Both have nicknames but neither nn is anything to do with their actual name (ie DS1 is not a Barney, at least not yet) Surname is one syllable, pretty dull and quite common name. The 3 top contenders on the shortlist are (not in any particular order):-
Magnus
Gabriel
Fergus
We were both fixed on Fergus initially then I went off it and leaned towards Magnus which we were then fixed on until DH went off it and leaned more towards Gabriel. I do like Gabriel (esp after reading on a post on here about a baby nicknamed Baby Gabey) and I like the nn Gabe. I also like the nn Fergie but am not esp bothered by the fact that there is no obvious nn for Magnus (not Maggie!) given how current DC's nn's have evolved totally separately from their actual names.
Other names on the long list (which have all now been excluded) are below with reasons for exclusion:-
Monty: don't like fact that it's a shortened name but don't like Montague or Montgomery
Henry: northern IL's can't pronounce their H's and DH sometimes struggles
Rupert: I love. DH does not. Although he does love Rufus which I do not. Go figure...
Hector: see Henry re dropped H's
Angus: no real reason for dropping it, just feel stronger about Fergus and Magnus plus Angus and Rory might be a bit much for an entirely non Scottish family!
Wilbur: I think it's cool but I think DH thinks it's a bit silly plus BIL is Will
Oscar: me more keen than DH. Quite popular these days?
Miles: family name on my grandmother's side. DH not keen
Milo: random variation on Miles. Possibly a tad poncey?
Otis: doesn't seem to culturally fit us
Freddie: love love love for reasons quite close to me but do not like Frederick at all (or Alfred due to risk of Alfie which we're not keen on) and not keen on the idea of Freddie as a stand-alone name.
I would be grateful for views on the shortlist plus suggestions of any other names you think might work based on the long and short lists.
Thanks!
