We are due in December so it is hardly urgent at the moment but I think I like the name Edgar - am I mad? I like Ed and Eddie but not too keen on Edward.
DP has only come up with horrendous comedy names so far (Street Fighter characters/ Star Trek characters etc) and it took us ages to name our cat so I am trying to start early smile

Just no.

Sounds like it's one of those love or hate names from all the comments. Personally, I love it. It was on my shortlist for DS. Ultimately, whatever name you do choose, chances are someone won't like it so may as well go with what you like.

Only negative association I'd have would be Edgar Linton from Wuthering Heights

Hummuschocolate Sun 26-May-13 15:01:40

Its unusual but I like it, I think I slightly prefer Edmund or Edwin though

Edgar was Gloucester's 'Good' (but rather wet) son in 'King Lear'. Edmund was Gloucester's 'Bad' (but incredibly sexy) son.

Edmund was turned 'bad' in 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' but was redeemed and is sound in the other Narnia books he appears in.

Edmund is also the main love interest in Jane Austen's 'Mansfield Park'.

You may have guessed by now, I have an Edmund! His nn was supposed to be Ned, but we forgot to use it so now he's a teenager he's called 'Ed' by all his friends and teachers, which I've never liked that much. 'Eds' are assumed to be Edwards, certainly among his generation where there are so many. Whether that assumption will carry through to your 2013/14 vintage baby Edgar, nn Ed, I don't know.

Its my middle name I love it!

valiumredhead Sat 25-May-13 19:29:31

Love Edgar but not keen on Edmund at all.

I love Edgar. I like Teddy as a nn too but that's quite popular now I think.

I love it, but (haven't even bothered to read the thread) I know most MNers hate it. So what? go with it if you love it & your partner likes it too.

cantbloodywellchoose Sat 25-May-13 19:08:06

Oh it's quite cool!

Leonas Sat 25-May-13 19:01:56

I do love Edgar Allen Poe but it didn't influence my idea. I can imagine Edgar being a wee chunker. I really don't like Edwin and Edmund was too horrible in the Narnia books for me to consider. DP doesn't like it so it looks like it has been vetoed but thanks for your help!

I love Edgar, my DH nickname has been Edgar for so long that people think its his real name and often comment on how great it is! Go for it I say!

pigletpower Thu 16-May-13 22:58:27

It's bizzare that I absolutely adore names like Edgar,Edwin,Edmund etc but hate with a passion Eddie or Ed!

miffybun73 Thu 16-May-13 22:56:55

No. Sounds really effete/wimpy to me, whereas Edward sounds like a good strong name.

Just read MissRabbitsCV's post though so obviously not all Edgar's are like that in reality smile

Theironfistofarkus Thu 16-May-13 22:42:54

Please don't! It reminds me of rotten eggs!

MissRabbitsCV Thu 16-May-13 22:39:10

Love it. DS1 (3.3 yo) used to have an Edgar at nursery. I think it's a really strong name. Edgar at nursery was a little chunk. smile

JojoMags Thu 16-May-13 22:33:36

Prefer Edwin (in fact love this) and Edmund. Edgar is fine, just a bit sinister round the edges. Makes me think of ravens - Edgar Allen Poe and all that... Go for it if you love it. You can always shorten to Eddie if things start getting dark.

Laquila Thu 16-May-13 22:29:25

I like Edgar (and Edmund) and I love Edwin.

oldspeckledtam Thu 16-May-13 19:07:14

I have one. It's a brilliant, strong, name. I have never had a negative comment about it! It's so versatile too- endless nicknames! I'd say go for it, but I don't want it getting too popular.... wink

sleepingbeautiful Thu 16-May-13 16:46:51

Don't like Edgar, it sounds unattractive when said loud.
Like Edward, Edwin/Edwyn and Edmund though. There's also Edison but that may be too 'American' sounding if you are UK.

hbmeic Thu 16-May-13 15:19:59

Awful. Don't do it.

CremeEggThief Thu 16-May-13 14:39:18

I know one who is now almost six. It grew on me...

Catlike Thu 16-May-13 14:35:58

Hmm I think it's the kind of name that would only be ok if you live in London or somewhere similar. I can't see it working well in a small town or in the sticks. He'd also need to be quite a strong, charismatic character to get away with it imo.

GoodbyePorkPie Thu 16-May-13 14:31:29

Edgar's great!

KittenofDoom Thu 16-May-13 13:04:44

Edgar Davids, Dutch footballer. He's pretty cool.
