Just heard of a newborn with this name. I'm told its origin is Swedish and it is pronounced the same as Maya (may-ah).

I really, really, love it! Just too beautiful not to share smile

Oh, I'd read it as like a London pronunciation of media, I'm afraid.

But the name 'Maya' isn't unique is it ? its just the spelling that's different
i pronounced it 'MeeJah'. If you like the name Maya, why not just use one of the more recognisable spellings for this name, there are loads to choose from (Mia, Maya, Miah, Mya) that won't result in Meeja, mehja, media etc

It's that spelling because the family are originally from Sweden. Also, I've learned that the name with that particular spelling has a totally different meaning (Swedish language) to Maya/Maia.

I think that Meja might have to explain her name/spelling to English speakers but it is certainly understandable knowing that she is from a Swedish background.

I can see why you might want to go with this spelling in that the children I know called Maya pronouce it My- a not May-a.

I would think it was pronounced Maya, mostly because it seems to be the most popular name at the moment everywhere. The other day I met five newborn babies, one after another
Maja (Polish parents)
Maya (Arab parents)
Maia (white British parents)
Maya (white British parents)
Mya (Black British parents)
I think it must be rising in popularity right now and it is a name with several legitimate spellings.

That makes perfect sense then, the fact it has a completely different meaning and the family are Swedish originally,But you're right for as long as she lives infact anywhere BUT Sweden she will find hersef correcting pronounciations of her name over and over again!
