Marley for a boy??

If we have a boy my partner really wants to name him Marley, he's wanted the name ever since i was pregnant with my first but we went for Dylan instead. This time round he still really wants it, im not overly keen on the name as i think it seems more of a girls name. What do you think??

The only Marleys I have ever come across are girls. However, there are so many unisex names these days, especially for modern surnamey type names, so I probably wouldn't bat an eyelid at a boy Marley.

I know two Marleys, both boys. Don't particularly like it but not because it sounds girly - just not a fan of surnamey first names.

I would be more likely to call a boy Marley than a girl.
I love it.

I really like it. I know of a boy called Marley, after Bob.

It goes well with dylan.

Well I guess both your siblings would both have the 'Bob' link! Not sure that would be great though.

Both of your DSs rather, not your siblings.

That was another thing that was getting me, i feel people would get the impression we were naming our children after all the famous Bob's!

Or the Labrador.

Sorry, that was the first thing that sprang to my mind. As long as you don't go on to have a Monkhouse!

It's a lovely name. I know a boy called Marley (his brother is called bob - yes really) and he is lovely.

It's a possible name choice for my baby but im having a girl and see it more as a boys name in the UK. In America there are a lot of girls called Marley

I know 2 Marley 's - both boys. One is a teenager, one just under 1 years old. I think its a lovely name! Tho ive never thought of it in relation to Bob Marley-I always think of Jacob Marley from A Christmas Carol, but that's prob just me! Anyway, thumbs up from me regardless!

Marley is a good name! But not with Dylan, sounds like the start of a list of 70s musicians...

I must admit I've never heard of the name and don't like it very much. I also immediately thought of Bob Marley.

Cool name, definitely think of it as a boys name. We have just come back from hols in Florida and our DS (11) made friends with a boy in the hotel called Marley and our DS thinks it's a really cool name.

I don't mind it but prefer the more traditional Marlon. I know a Marlin too.

However Marley reminds me of that horrible drippy American movie about a dog, Marley and Me.

Gugglebum · 24/04/2013 04:09

I would more likely assume it was a girl.

I like it and the two I know are boys. I think it goes really well with Dylan.

I agree with the 70s musician theme.

I'd assume it was a boy.

TBH I've heard of it mainly as a surname (Bob Marley) or a dog's name.

Otherwise how about Harley?

proudmummy10 · 24/04/2013 11:01

I did suggest Harley but dp doesn't like it. We find out today if we are having a boy or girl.. If its a girl it will make name choosing a whole lot easier as we seem to agree more on girl names. Thank you all for your opinions.

My neighbour has a son called Marley - cute while DS is still small, but I don't think it's a name that carries well into adulthood.
Love the name Dylan - would have it for my own DS, but that's the name of the neighbour's cat!

How about Hope for a girl to continue the Bob theme.

Not just you whattimestea - I know a Marley and I always thought of Marley's ghost as the inspiration for his name until someone pointed out it was after Bob!
