Thoughts on Albert?

Just wondering what people think of Albert. I love it, but am wondering if it sounds a bit pretentious - if you heard it would you think the baby had been named after Einstein?

I like it a lot and don't think it's pretentious.

I really like it I really like Arthur too but that's getting very popular whereas I don't know any little Alberts

Love it. I teach a ten-year old Albert. When he first arrived at school in reception, I thought it was an odd name for a little boy, but I've grown to really like it.

Perfectly sound name. Wouldn't have thought of Einstein!

Ditto Marthabear. Love it, love love love Bertie as nn too. Don't think it's pretentious at all and I wouldn't think you'd named it after Einstein.

Close friends have a six month old called Albert. He's a lovely baby and it suits him. They were going to call him Albie as a nn but he gets Albert all the time. Great name, not at all pretentious and they've had no negative comments (except the grandparents of course!)

NO! Because its my baby name and I don't want it to be popular!!!

On a serious note, I absolutely love love love it, its classless, wide choice of nicknames which are all nice, timeless, and not too popular but still normal.

Not sure about Albert, but love Bertie. And could be Al when older, which is cooler for a teenager than Bertie I think.

Dd would of been Albert if she'd been a boy. I love it!

Lovely classic name and its not such a bad thing to be called after Albert Einstein. I can think of worse people to be named after.

great thanks everyone! yes I like the choice of nicknames, and also that someone called Albert sounds like he could come from a variety of places - I can imagine a British, or Central European, or North American, or African Albert. Just have to convince OH now (oh yes... and get pregnant Smile )

For me it's an "old bloke up the pub" name (& my dad's middle name) but it's nicer than Wilf which is getting popular on here.

Its my 12 year old nephews middle name. My sister said she wasn't brave enough to use it as his 1st name. I quite like it actually! I am 20 weeks pg with DC 2 and find out the sex hopefully on Tuesday would it be wrong to consider it as a first name if I find out I'm having a boy????

It's my DS's name and needless to say we love it! He was named after my very fabulous grandad, and lots of people have complimented us on it. Smile

Love it. My friend just had a little Bertie and he really suits it

It is not "timeless". It became popular after the Prince Consort, continued into the Edwardian era then began to fall away as the 20th century progressed. It is a cyclical name.

My OH is really pushing for this name and I hate it, well not actually the name tbh, just with OH's accent he doesn't say the T sound, and in Bertie (his preferred nn) it sounds terribly hillbilly.
