I didn't choose Adelaide...was I right?

Just a musing really. When I was pregnant with my now 18 month old, the girls name I liked the best was Adelaide. I didn't go for it for a whole host of reason....didn't want to saddle her with an unusual name not sure of reception from family and wondered how she would feel growing up in Sputh East London with such a name.

Anyway we went for another one which is completely differ net but still lovely with lots of lovely derivatives. But.... What do you think of Adelaide? Would you have rolled your eyes in private? Any other such names? My mum wanted Guinevere for me, but decided against for the same reasons.......

I nearly went for Adelaide too. I love it but didn't like the thought of the nickname Adi, I went for something more 50's in the end which I'm happy with.

I did wonder if Kate Middleton might use Adelaide as it's a Royal name.

I love Adelaide, but I'm sure what you've chosen is just as nice! Guinevere probably is a bit more extreme, so I can understand why your mum might have decided to back away from that one...

I love it.
What did you choose in the end?

I'd rather not say which name we chose in the end but we have two girls and the names we considered were

Katherine
Adelaide
Mary
Maria
Constance
Edith
Judith
Rosemary
Elizabeth

And we out girls names are from that list (but obviously not Adelaide!)

TBH I prefer all the other names on your list to Adelaide! So whatever you've chosen I think it's a nicer choice.

I prefer the others to Adelaide, too. I think it looks pretty on paper, but I don't like the spoken version. Maybe it's the final 'D' sound.

I think all your list is lovely so even if Adelaide would have been the best you've chosen well.

I prefer Mary, Maria and Constance to Adelaide. Adelaide sounds to me the most faddy - well, the only faddy name on your list.

HTH :)

My grandmothers middle name was Adelaide and she grew up in London. I think it's a nice name, but it was never explained why- London family so no Aussie connections ( that we know of!)

Personally I'm not a fan, so I think you made the right choice. Also, I have a strong SE London accent and Adelaide does not lend itself well to such a thing Grin

I think you were right :)
I just think 'Australia' and prefer all the other names on your list.

You did the right thing, Adelaide is clunky.

A family member has a 9 month old called Adeline which is v similar but maybe not as harsh?

I'm trying to convince my friend to call her baby Adelaide or Florence right now. I love them both and don't think Adelaide is all that 'out there' even though it's not a commonly used name at the moment. Best of both worlds really.

It's a Royal name and I think it has quite a musical sound to it, and something French. Not faddy at all.

My favourites from your list are Adelaide, Constance, Elizabeth and Judith.

I like Katherine and Maria best out of your list. Adelaide just makes me think of Australia!

I actually prefer Adelaide to all the names on your list, I think they're a bit stuffy.

I wouldn't have considered it an out there name at all. I think you should have gone for it.

My little girl is called Adelaide. I know what you mean about doubting it. Even though I love her name, it still worries me what other people think (hence clicking on this thread!) Strangely, we never even considered it when I was pregnant, it just seemed right when she was born. Judith and Elizabeth were on our list too!

Well lots of interesting replies - quite split really, so I guess pretty much the same as any other name.....it's all down to personal opinion!

I'm not overly keen on Adelaide. There's an Adeline in ds' class (nn Addie) and I do think that name is lovely.

I thought Adelaide was a version of Adelheid, Heidi.
