I think it's lovely. But I'm biased as my ds has a Welsh name. smile

ClaraOswald Tue 09-Apr-13 22:34:00

Iestyn is the name.

Estyn is the education and training inspectorate for Wales.

poorbuthappy Tue 09-Apr-13 22:34:07

Shouldn't it be spelt Iestyn?
Estyn is the welsh equivalent of Osfsted.

poorbuthappy Tue 09-Apr-13 22:34:39

Ummm Ofsted, obviously!!

IDontDoIroning Tue 09-Apr-13 22:34:49

Isnt it Iestyn
Estyn is the welsh ofsted
But I might be wrong

On thought of the chef that makes weird food. Not gonna attempt his last name! But think he is Heston, but is it said pretty much the same?

edam Tue 09-Apr-13 22:38:59

thank heavens for MN, seems like all these posters have saved OP from a bit of a blunder... grin

Estyn is a real name. It is a derivation of Iestyn but definitely a real name. (I was on the phone to one bout 2 hours ago!) There are 10 Estyns registered to vote in the UK. Interestingly 2 are Estyn Williams, 2 are Estyn Jones.

One snag with the name is that people often instinctively think it is a female. Another is that it cannot be given without the word "what" being said afterwards.

Sammie - I wonder if we are related.......

DuelingFanjo Tue 09-Apr-13 22:59:23

Out of interest, how are you pronouncing it?

MummytoKatie Tue 09-Apr-13 23:02:34

AvrilPoisson Tue 09-Apr-13 23:03:54

I only know it as the Welsh equiv of OFSTED!
I live in England, not Wales btw.

I think you pronounce it more like yestin

diamondsneezer Tue 09-Apr-13 23:07:09

I knew an Iestyn, pronounced Yustin.

MummytoKatie Tue 09-Apr-13 23:19:05

Iestyn can be pronounced Yestin or Yustin but the Estyn I know is definitely Estin.

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie Tue 09-Apr-13 23:21:04

Sammie I don't like in Wales either but I immediately thought of the Welsh Ofsted. Sorry.

MERLYPUSS Wed 10-Apr-13 08:52:15

Never heard of either Wlsh ofsted of Estin. Thought of Austin though which I'm not keen on. Estyn is cool.

Sammie, having read your last post, I hope you do use Estyn - it would be a lovely tribute to your Grandfather.

It only brought to mind Iestyn Harris to me. Choose whichever spelling you prefer.

oh, sammie's posts have gone - hope you are OK, Sammie?
