I have a lovely surname, one i have no intention of parting with even when I get the ring on my finger. I am minded for our off spring to have my OH's surname, but unfortunately this is Bate. What names can I come up with to soften the Bate?

Bate is fine!

It's a decent-sounding name. I don't understand why you think it's unpleasant.

As long as no letters are addressed to your DS as Master.
Which they probably will be.

I would give the DCs your name TBH.

If you really want to go with your partner's then I would tend to avoid a first name with ends with an unstressed syllable or very soft sound as this will run the two names together and put emphasis on Bate. ie. Lucy Bate, Sophie Bate, Calum Bate.

Give them your name.

joiemecconue Fri 05-Apr-13 00:21:49

if your name is nicer use that, I am imagining A. Bate, D. Bate at best and I'm sure you've already considered the worst

Not too bad! Christopher Bate/ Isabella Bate/ etc etc or double barrel- depending on your name? Look at me naming your unborn babies smile

Thanks for the suggestions. I am toying with trying to get OH to change his name to Bale. One one consonant, but it makes the world of difference.

I love Floretta BTW.

Agree put 2-3 syllables together for first name. But really most the standard English names (like William or Thomas, Mary or Clara) will work, even their NNs work.

I'd avoid Kate as nn, is all.

Bate is bad. Was at school with one and he was called MaSTEr Bate constantly. It only bothered him for the first three years.

so I would double barrel it with your name first so that it is sur name=bate not bate-sur name.

Aoifebelle Sun 07-Apr-13 22:11:32

My friends already call us Rebate. My surname begins with Re. Not really down with the double barrelling.
