I really like Elena and for ages it was top of the list for dd3, but then I heard people pronounce it more like Elinor than Eh-lay-na, which is how I liked it said. It put me off and I didn't bother with it.

Elena

Miriam by a long way.

Elena would be constantly confused with Eleanor and Helena, and she would inevitably be another bloody Ellie.

I love the name Miriam, and Min or Mimi for short. Elena is a pretty name but I think people would get the pronunciation wrong (I'm presuming you want to pronounce it El-LAY-na?)

Thanks all. I think I like Miriam too, it seems a bit less of the moment. I don't know the sex yet but as DH doesn't much like girls names ending in -a (see other thread) I've been trying to find names that aren't Jane or Alice.

I had a friend called Miriam at school. It was unusual then, as well, but a lovely "solid" name.

My mum is 62 and called Miriam, and I don't think she, or I, has ever met another one.

Elena can be pronounced the Spanish way (E-lay-na) or the Italian way (Elen-a). I have an Italian one :-) and she has never been an Ellie. Miriam is very beautiful too and quite unusual - I admire your taste in names CruCru!

Meredith? Mirabel?

Elena's nice, though there are lots of them. Miriam always seems a bit prim, somehow.

Miriam. Great classic name. Also love Miranda and Meredith if you're after suggestions, or Marianne...
