I love this name, but wanted to check how people would pronounce it. What do you think?

Umlauf Fri 08-Mar-13 08:41:28

Don't know... Airy? On a girl... Or Arri like Harry maybe, if it was a boy. Or even ah ri...

How is it supposed to be pronounced?

DolomitesDonkey Fri 08-Mar-13 09:03:25

It would depend on the company whether I'd pronounce it 'Arry wink or Are-ee - beautiful name either way. smile

If you're not Jewish be prepared to answer lots of questions!

blindworm Fri 08-Mar-13 09:24:24

I thought it was a boys name pronounced Ah-ri.

FreckledLeopard Fri 08-Mar-13 09:29:30

I'd think it was short for Aristotle an wonder if you were a fan of the Onassis family

Marmom Fri 08-Mar-13 09:53:08

I've heard it is pronounced Ah-ri, but when people have seen it written down, they tend to say Arry - which I really don't like. Does anyone know an Ari?

FarelyKnuts Fri 08-Mar-13 09:58:44

Ah ri. I know a little girl with this name. suits her smile

telsa Fri 08-Mar-13 10:37:29

Love it - reminds me of the Slits singer whose mum married Johnny Rotten - Ari Up

Rooble Fri 08-Mar-13 10:43:17

Wouldn't have a clue how you wanted it pronounced. I know an Aria - boy - who pronounces it Arriyah - but his parents have two very different non-English backgrounds so his name could have come from anywhere.

BeeBopDingALing Fri 08-Mar-13 10:54:08

Family member (girl) is called this. Pronounced Arry, like Harry with no H. Lovely name.
Telsa, Ari-Up was Johnny Rottens step daughter smile The name also reminds me of her whenever I hear it.

BeeBopDingALing Fri 08-Mar-13 10:55:05

Sorry Telsa misread your post - Baby brain!

NotADragonOfSoup Fri 08-Mar-13 11:00:40

Seeing it written down, I'd think Arry.

Yannah2006 Fri 08-Mar-13 11:01:35

I love Ari (Ah-ree) for a boy. I rather like the pronunciation 'Arry' too, but i'm a Game of Thrones fan.

The only Ari i've heard of (as in not a baby name book) is from a cracking film called The Royal Tenenbaums. It was a pair of brothers called Ari and Uzi.

dolomitesdonkey even if they're not Jewish, i don't think it'd matter! Not everyone in England chooses English names.

Fallenangle Fri 08-Mar-13 11:04:10

Probably Ari. Could be confusion when she is referred to with people thinking its Harry with the h dropped. I think the name looks pretty than it sounds. How would you pronounce it?

ItsallisnowaFeegle Fri 08-Mar-13 11:04:50

I love it. I pronounced it Ah-ray when I read your title.

Fallenangle Fri 08-Mar-13 11:05:29

Prettier than it sounds -auto correct to blame

KirstyJC Fri 08-Mar-13 11:05:47

'Arry. Like you mean Harry but dropped the H!grin

If you want it pronounced Are-ey then maybe another A would emphasise that? Aari?

LuluLovesYou Fri 08-Mar-13 11:09:37

I have heard it used by Americans and they pronounce it Aw ree, I really like it!
How about Avi, Ami or Asa all lovely also!

Marmom Fri 08-Mar-13 13:03:10

Thanks for all your comments. I actually like the name Ari for a boy. We have no Jewish connections, we just like the name. We heard it from the TV show Entourage.

wigglesrock Fri 08-Mar-13 13:53:11

I would think Entourage grin and pronounce it as it is in the show.

blindworm Fri 08-Mar-13 14:20:55

I like Ari on a boy. I've only ever heard it as a boys name.

FunnyBird Fri 08-Mar-13 14:23:56

It's my niece's nickname. Short for Arianna.

alwayslateforwork Fri 08-Mar-13 14:25:20

I know an Ari.

Full name Ariane. No one calls her that. And it's definitely 'are - eeee' for her, although when they say her full name, they say 'arry ann'. Funny old world.

I have two girls with names that are pronounced differently by about 50% of the population. You can't control it.

Zavi Fri 08-Mar-13 14:27:53

Lovely name I think. Unusual though.

I suspect most people hearing it for the first time would wonder what's it short for - and guess Aristotle...

ChoccyWoccyDoDa Fri 08-Mar-13 14:31:46

I would assume short for Arianne?
