Which (if any!) is the correct pronunciation?

Dillydollydaydream Fri 01-Mar-13 12:20:10

I think tal ee ess in

Umlauf Fri 01-Mar-13 12:23:03

On Child of Our Timethey were pronouncing it to rhyme with Alison. That's the only time I'd heard the name

FriggFRIGGisPoorlySick Fri 01-Mar-13 12:28:36

Oh,yes, that must be where that particular pronunciation has seeped into my subconscious from...

FriggFRIGGisPoorlySick Fri 01-Mar-13 12:29:17

But I have a feeling it isn't the correct one...

Sidge Fri 01-Mar-13 12:37:18

This is my Welsh friend's son's name and they pronounce it Tally-ESS-un.

Gwennan Fri 01-Mar-13 12:50:58

I've heard it pronounced tal-YES-in

HorryDrelincourt Fri 01-Mar-13 13:01:43

The only one I have known was tally-ESS-in

mejon Fri 01-Mar-13 14:37:53

Gwennan has it right - it is Tal-YES-in. Tally-ess-in is like pronouncing Pontypandy as Pontee-pandy wink.

Happy st David's day!

FriggFRIGGisPoorlySick Fri 01-Mar-13 19:51:45

Tal-ee-ESS-in is over-pronuncing?

Tal-es-in is under-pronuncing?

And Tal-YES-in is correct?

With the 'YES' in the middle said in the same way as 'yes'? It sounds odd said that way to my English ear....or perhaps it's just my accent grin
Or more like Tal-yuhs-in? <hopeful> and confused

surroundedbyblondes Fri 01-Mar-13 19:53:55

However his parents decide!

simonthedog Fri 01-Mar-13 19:59:59

QuickQuickSloe Fri 01-Mar-13 20:01:39

QuickQuickSloe Fri 01-Mar-13 20:02:14

Sorry auto correct fail.

Tal ee ess in.

2kidsintow Fri 01-Mar-13 20:05:56

North Wales here.

Tal ee es in.
(Local school of that name)

mejon Fri 01-Mar-13 20:16:35

Frigg - I think what you've said about over and under-pronounciation is spot on. The 'yes' is just as you would say it in English.

thegreylady Fri 01-Mar-13 20:19:06

It is a great name however it is pronounced smile

FriggFRIGGisPoorlySick Fri 01-Mar-13 20:22:32

I really like Tal-ee-es-in,and Tal-es-in...both roll nicely off my tongue.
It seems like Tal-ee-es-in is at least the correct pronunciation in some parts...

FriggFRIGGisPoorlySick Fri 01-Mar-13 20:23:39

Though the more I say Tal-Yes-in,the more I like it. grin

LastDaughterofKrypton Sat 02-Mar-13 06:11:48

Gwennan has the right of it. Tal-yes-in. Think of the 'ie' being pronounced the same as in Ieuan.

FriggFRIGGisPoorlySick Sat 02-Mar-13 08:14:58

Ahhh,I see,thankyou Last that's v helpful!

junemami Sat 02-Mar-13 08:34:24
