Fabian?
I posted recently as we had narrowed our boys name list down to Samuel and Oscar. But I wanted to try and find something a bit less popular. I've trawled through lists and can't seem to find anything. And then saw Fabian on another post.
DH quite likes it but Im not sure. What would the nn be? Or do you think it would remain Fabian.
Any thoughts much appreciated. Thanks

depends if you were pronouncing it FAY-bian or FAB-ian ?

I'd prefer it if there was a different way of spelling it but as far as I am aware there is not.

As in the Fabian Society?

Our DCs have NNs that are nothing to do with their names. However, Fab sounds good to me, but it's short enough not to worry. I like it.

I had thought Fay-bee-an.
The more I think about it the more im not sure. Is it a bit too "pretty" for a boys name?
Maybe we really should just stick to Samuel and put up with the other four in his class!

I like it as I get very bored with all the Jameses and Harrys. Unusual boys names will bed down.

Fabian (fay-bee-an) is a great name. I know what you mean, questioning whether its too 'pretty' but I think this is more the spelling than the pronunciation. I know a 23 year old Fabian. It's always been considered a pretty cool name by those that meet him and he wears it really well. Smile

Like it a lot.

I like Simon and Simeon too - do you like either of those?

I like it. Samuel is a lovely name but a bit boring so Fabian get my vote. How about Gabriel,? It strikes me as similar to Fabian.

I had a uni friend called Fabian. He was known as Fab. Not such a bad nickname.

Love it and agree with your pronunciation.

I like it - is not too popular but most people would know how to spell it.

Love it. Very timeless, yet a little unusual.

I think it's lovely.

I have always liked the name 'Fabian'. I think you should stick with it, if your DH likes it also.

Fabian is lovely
Simon/Simeon suggested above is good
Benjamin not too many of those around, I know 2 (18 yr old & 32 yr old)
Michael / Mikhail

I had it on my list then decided against it for the reasons that are worrying you about it plus DH wasn't that keen.

I love Simeon and don't know why it isn't more popular tbh. I think also if the popularity of Samuel is worrying you there are still lots of less popular and lovely boys names to choose from.

It would become Fab I think.

What about Caspian or Lucian (pronounced Looshun)

I do wonder sometimes if people posting on name threads have actually ever met a group of 10 year old boys........

Report
Supermim · 10/02/2013 10:40

Fabian sounds very posh and a bit gay, and would probably be shortened to Fay - my honest opinion

sw11mumofone · 10/02/2013 10:42

Wow ok. Wasnt expecting so many positive responses.
Thanks for the other suggestions too. I really like Simeon but DH doesnt. I LOVE Gabriel - it was my number one boys name when we had DD. But my DH went to school with a Gabriel who was taunted with "gay" jibes. Do you think kids are past that in 2013?
And love Benjamin but is my nephews name.

LOL @ Seeker!

DS is 10 and his gang are Max, Lewis, Jay, Jamie, George, Josh, Sam, Tom, Ryder, Jake, Dan etc

Not a Fabian, Caspian or Lucian in sight!!!!!

Well Ryder is a lot odder than Fabian.

I'd abbreviate to Fabes or Fabe.

Where i live every other new baby boy is Milo, Monty, Arlo, Oscar, Archie and Caspar. So in 10 years time there probably wont be so many groups of Georges, Toms, Jakes etc...10 years is quite a long time in terms of name trends.

Yes I agree - names are certainly changing! DS has a fairly unusual name but it certainly doesn't stand out from the crowd Smile
