Um, is it common to think "condom" when you hear "Johnny"?

We are toying with the name Jonathan. Possible nicknames would be Jonty or Jonny. DH is paranoid people thing of condoms when they hear Johnny. Is he right?

Not me, I have a friend with the name Johnny and never thought that.

Although I think Jonathan is a lovely name and not sure why you would not just call him that if that is his name.

Jonathan is a nice name ... People may just call him that. I wouldn't do the association mentioned in your post.

Nope.

Yes. I knew a Jonny at uni who went by "Rubber".

Svrider · 07/02/2013 20:49

Yes sorry
Rubber jonny is the more common word than condom round here

I have a Jonathan, he's not known as Jonny, he's still Jonathan at the age of 13. All the Jonathan's I knew growing up are Jons now.

Hmm...nope, know a Johnny never occurred to me to associate his name with condom.

Where do you live Svrider?

I'm v disappointed so many are saying yes. I know not everyone shortens names but I do so I need a good short version of Jonathan for when he's a baby. Sigh.

Yes, I do.

I don't think it's a particularly common word for them now though, so probably the kids he'll grow up with won't think of it.

yes sorry.

But if you name your DS Jonathan he will generally be known as "Jon" unless he always introduces himself as "Jonty". Every Jonathan I know is known as "Jon" generally and every Jonathan's mother doesn't like it... Wink

Rubber Jonnie was definitely a major condom term to my generation (and it's the first think I think of). It's a well enough known term that it is likely to continue to impinge -across generations, even though it's less current. Though it's still and more widely used in the US these days.

No, I know a johnny who is now 4 and it never occurred to me, lovely name :)

blindworm · 07/02/2013 21:16

No.
DS1 is 15 and knows a couple of Johnnys and as far as I know no one's ever made a condom association.

Svrider · 07/02/2013 21:17

I'm in notts and almost 40
Perhaps it's a generational thing
All the best in your name choice

Well, yes, I think of it after you've prompted me to do so. I wouldn't have otherwise.

It's quite a dated slang term for condom these days, plus I think Johnny/Jonny is enough of a name in its own right to transcend the condom association...

He may get some mild teasing, maybe, possibly, but then there's something to tease about everyone's name if you're determined enough. Wink

yes

johnny = condom round here

My first thought would be 'Galecki' rather than 'condom'.

MidnightMasquerader · 07/02/2013 21:19

I'm 39 and it sounds old-fashioned and dated to me...

Yes, I do think Rubber Jonny, sorry.

But Jonathan, Jon or Jonty are all fine. No associations there.

Yika · 07/02/2013 21:20

Jonathan is a lovely name! Call him Jon if you don't want jonny. I wouldn't make the association with a condom anyway.

'fraid so, but it's very rare for Jonathans to be called Johnny.
I know Jonathans, John/Jons, and a Jonty.

In the abstract, yes. In the context of my friend Jonny, no.

I know Jonathans who go by Jonathan, Jonny, Jon, Joffy (small child), Jonno, Jack and Joe. There are loads of options, and he'll pick the version that suits him. It's a lovely name. It'd be on my list if my sister hadn't beaten me to it!

I think Johnny as in rubber and when my mum suggested it as a nice name I said...nope...condoms! Not sure how Midnight finds it dated though!

It depends on the context, I wouldn't think of condoms if you said 'this is my baby, Jonny'. I know a couple of little Jonnys and have never thought of condoms.

You could call him John John when he's little
