All first names were names we both loved.
Andrew is my husbands name and Jane my name. William was my husbands fathers name and Margaret my mothers name.

nationality of my partner
went with surname
no friends of relatives with same name, or their children
one was after my dad
we both liked
couldn't be shortened to anything we didn't like
easily spelled and pronounced
not too popular, but not unheard of

which took it down to about 5 names in total

We went down the list if top one thousand names in the UK and managed a shortlist of about 5 that we both liked. We then used them aloud, combined with surname etc until we were sure on one.

Before the great list read we both knew we wanted a naice MC name, long and with the potential for nicknames, but hadn't found one we both liked. Hence the list...

DS1 - from Star Trek, 3 years before he was born, plus family middle names.
DS2 - an actors name plus family middle name.
DS3 - read the name out to DH from the name book and he really liked it. Plus family middle name.
DS4 - I'd had it on my list for DS2 but DH didn't like it, as he chose DS3's I chose DS4's (they're twins) Family middle name.
DS5 - From one of my favourite books that I was re-reading when I was pregnant. His middle name is also from the book. DH wasn't keen but didn't come up with any other options so I got my way.

If it has been totally up to me ds1 would of just been called Finn but dh didn't think it sounded like a 'real' name more like a nickname so we compromised and went for Finley .
Now thinking about it I think Finley ages better than Finn and am pleased was talked into naming him it.
Veronica is regularly Ronnie or Ron and Samuel Is Sam or Sammy.

We decided if it was a boy, we'd have Zachary, which is our fave character from our fave game (i know that sounds a little sad lol), bu agreed to having a family members name as a middle name. So it would of been Paul after my Dad, as he is inspirational to me.

Then we found out we was having a girl, which proved a nightmare for naming! Eventually we wittled it down to a couple of names;
Elia
Alice
Isabelle
And it was a name out of a hat job. I wanted her middle name to be Michelle after my Mum. But Isabelle and Michelle rhyme to . So we started looking more into meanings, and chose Seren. From the word serendipity, which means a happy accident/unexpected good surprise.

So it fitted since she wasn't planned lol.

First name DH came up with years before we were even thinking of getting pregnant, and when we found out we were having a girl we just went with it. I had a waver just after she was born as I felt I'd had no input into the name and wasn't sure about it, but now I love it.

Middle names were versions of our mum's names.

Each time I just picked my favourite name at the time (one boy and one girl) and stuck with it. I have 3 daughters and love their names, they're popular but that doesn't bother me at all. Middle names are family names.

I was very unscientific I didn't even look to see if their initials spelt anything out until I was expecting dd3 Blush and was on MN.

We did the 'coat peg' test. If there was a chance of another child with the same name in their class-forget it. It has worked!

Dt1's name was requested by their father in memory of his stillborn son so I used the Irish spelling. His middle name is a tribute to an Irish man who was shot (can't say too much more or it will totally out me Wink)

Dt2's name is an Irish name that I've always always loved and his middle name is a family name.

I had my girls names all planned out and it took me AGES to come up with the boys names after I found out what I was having!

Intrigued as to what this 'Coat Peg' test is!?

We talked about certain parameters, then thought / listened to others / read a few lists and ones we liked we suggested to each other until we whittled it down.
By parameters, I mean :
Wasn't to be the name of anyone else in the family
'proper' name
name that wasn't too common at the time (didn't do this with eldest, who has a really, really common name for boys his age, and that made it important for the next two) but
name that everyone would have heard of, so poor child wasn't having to explain their name for the rest of their lives
Easy to spell
Didn't give them initials that would lead to teasing
That we like, or, at least, didn't dislike, any likely shortenings.
That the name didn't remind me of any particular child I'd taught

It does start to narrow it down after a while!

Well, names like Jack,Daniel,Chloe,Ellie etc where there could be multiples in the class.Coat pegs would have to include surname initial to differentiate.I didn't want my children to be in a bunch of kids with same name.

DD1 fav great aunt, my nn

both me and DSIL have the name our mum's use as our second name so DH suggested we continued the tradition.
(I never use my full name)

DD2 a weather girl DH fancied, with a name everyone liked, DMIL's pretty first name (that she used only on cheques)

Sadly DMIL died while I was PG with DD2, so she never git to meet her wounderful eccentric name sake.

Startail · 17/12/2012 01:33

got to meet her wonderful.
I've miss spelt it wounderful so often it now appears as an option.

We chose names we loved, that weren't already overly popular and that sound good with our surname. Middle names are family names.

We had a whole list of names for DS but despite the fact that my gut feeling was that he was a boy, we had agreed on a girl's name, but couldn't choose a boys. When he arrived, he had such a cheeky little face that we decided he looked like a William (which wasn't even on the list!) . William always made me think of cheeky little boys (I think it's because of Just William). Also it's FILs middle name.

We had a list, but both times I "knew" what the right name was after they were born. With DS2 we were undecided about the middle name. DH went off to the Register Office and said - I'll tell you when I get back Grin

DS1 (13) is Jack which was the name of my great-grandfather. He was still alive when DS1 was born and Jack was his first great-great-grandchild (and the only one he was alive to see). DS1's first middle name is Christopher, which is my dad's name. His second middle name is quite distinctive (an old family name on my side) so I don't want to reveal that.

DS2 (6) is Alexander which is a name DH and I both loved. He goes by Lex for short. His first middle name is David, which is after DH's father. Again, his second middle name is quite distinctive (an old family name on DH's side), so don't want to share that one either.

DD (3) is Sarah and that is simply my favourite girl name in the entire world. I love it's simple charm. Both of DD's middle names are distinctive, so I don't want to share them. The first is a blended name which conveniently combines the names of my mum and DH's mum; it is a proper blended name (i.e. like the name Maryanne is), it not something we created ourselves. The second is an old family name on my side.

Currently expecting DC4, who I'm hoping will be a boy, purely because both DH and I find boy names easier. There are very few girl names we love but we have a very long list of boy names.

First name was one with both really liked. I think it's a shame we didn't think about it more though, because it does mean I can never use my favourite girls name (which I actually like more than DS's name). Middle names are one family name and one which, again, we both just liked. The result of this was Harley Philip Beau.

Ds is named after the lead character in my favourite childhood book, his middle names are dh name and my maiden name

Dd is named a Gaelic name because we wanted something which 'went' with ds's name and because it's not too hard to spell or pronounce and it's pretty. Her middle names are my middle name and my maiden name.

DD1 (18) - the female form of DH's late father + family name from DH side as a middle name.

DD2 (13) - a name we both liked that my DM vetoed as it was "too posh" + family name from DH side as a middle name.

DS (5) - a name we both liked + a family name from my side as a middle name.

Both DD2 and DS have names that are consistently in the top 10 but have managed to avoid being in classes full of children with the same names.
