What do you think of this name for a girl?

MothershipG Fri 16-Nov-12 16:43:19

I like it but it sounds too much like Muriel, I bet you'd get that all the time, so don't use it if that would drive you potty. smile

How about Meridith? Merry for short? I thought about this for DD but bottled it because I was worried that she'd get teased every time she wasn't 'merry'!

amazingmumof6 Fri 16-Nov-12 16:51:54

pretty, but it would sound like and/or mistaken for Mary-el or Muriel to me, I sense much trouble ahead always correcting people!(not sure how you plan to pronounce it)

also the "eriel" part is too similar to Ariel (washing powder?) or aerial

would you go for Miriel & Miriella?
(just made these up,don't know if they exist or not!)
bit more clarity and cohesion for sounding a spelling

Quite pretty. Although Muriel is probably more well known.( Reminds me of the film Muriel's wedding. She changed her name to Mariel. Love that film! Sorry slightly off topic )

AlwaysHoldingOnToStarbug Fri 16-Nov-12 17:04:05

It reminded me of Muriel's Wedding too. That said, I do think it's quite a nice name.

GrownupGoth Fri 16-Nov-12 17:05:06

Love it. Beautiful and it doesn't remind me of Muriel.

Notquite Fri 16-Nov-12 17:10:04

I really like Meriel and it just isn't Muriel, Ariel or anything else.

SomersetONeil Fri 16-Nov-12 18:54:39

I don't love it.

Merryn is much nicer.

thegreylady Fri 16-Nov-12 18:58:21

I like it but think I prefer Merryn.

hatebeak Fri 16-Nov-12 19:44:51

Love it. Knew a v clever and beautiful one once. Sweet short version, too.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie Fri 16-Nov-12 20:33:29

Don't like it due to being too like Muriel (which is horrible). Merry is lovely though - could it work as a nn for Miranda or Marianne maybe?

amazingmumof6 Fri 16-Nov-12 21:46:14

remust Muriel means sparkling, shining sea - hardly horrible!

elportodelgato Fri 16-Nov-12 21:47:23

Agree with others who've suggested Merryn, my friend's baby has this name and I am envy I didn't think of it myself

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie Fri 16-Nov-12 21:48:04

It may mean something pretty, but personally I think it sounds horrible. Meriel sounds prettier than Muriel imho.

SavoyCabbage Fri 16-Nov-12 21:48:17

What would put me off is the thought of people saying 'not so Merry today' or similar for the rest of her life.

Noggie Fri 16-Nov-12 21:52:47

Love 'merry' and was tempted for our dd but we live on merrylee road and thought best not to for that reason! Very pretty.

showtunesgirl Fri 16-Nov-12 22:08:04

I know a Merry but she's a Meryl. What about Meryl?

Arithmeticulous Fri 16-Nov-12 22:09:47

I was going to say Meryl or Merryn or even Muriel itself.

StetsonsAreCool Fri 16-Nov-12 22:36:18

I like Meriel. I know a grown up one through work, and afaik people can work out how to say it...

deleted203 Fri 16-Nov-12 22:37:55

I love it! Much nicer than Meryl.

She will be two in december, born dec 2010. In the year shecwas born there were less than 30 children registeted as merryn/merren (boys spelling) it was roughly the same number in 2011 so i dont think.its getting more popular but i keep seeing it mentioned on mnet! I dint want it to end up really popular!

It is a lovely name and we often get positive comments and asked where we got it from smile

Meriel is lovely and Merry is a gorgeous NN. Mireille is also pretty.
