If you are second child do you feel your name is second best?

Expecting no 2 soon and was wondering if you are secon child of same sex do you feel you name is second best? After all, we chose our dd1 name because it was our favourite, and get middle name because it's our second favourite, so if this baby is a dd it will only get our third favourite name.

I think you are massively overthinking this.

Oh no, I have my parents 5th favorite name, as I am their 3rd DD!

Actually, my favorite name of all my DC is DS2's first name.

Of course I am overthinking. That is what this thread is for!

Ds2's name is actually my favourite boys' name but DH did not like it when we were naming DS1.

He came up with DS1's name and I love it now but casually mentioned when I was expecting DS2 that I still liked my original name and he agreed.

But if I was to have another (which I won't) there are plenty of names that I really love

Theo
Alfio

being 2 of them.

When my DD was born we had 2 possible first names in mind. We were definitely leaning towards one of them rather than the other. However when she eventually arrived she just looked so much like the 'second favourite' name so that's what we used and I'm so glad we did.

We came up with different lists of names each time, some names were on thd list more than once but we chose the names to suit the child, if i had to pick i would say that ds4 and dd have my favourite names and ds3 is my least favourite name but only because it isnt as unusual as the others, it suits him perfectly :) its certainly not the case that ds1 got our favourite boys name and the others then got ones we didnt like so much!

I think that if you used your most favourite ever name, that you'd had picked out since you were a child, on your first born that you may think something like that but otherwise no.

There are names that when pregnant you love but rule out for various reasons and by the next child you may not have those reasons anymore so you can use them.

Or your likes and dislikes change over time and affect your next name choice.

Or the top 100 names for that year come out and you reconsider things.

You pick the name you love at the time of child coming. And then you do it again. Doesn't change how much you love the name. Or mean that the second born got a less loved name.

I was very nearly called a different name entirely, so my name is unlikely to be my parents' "favourite name".

The name that I would have been called if I was a boy is not the name my brother has. So that's not a "favourite name" either.

I just don't think it works like that.

My younger sister's name is much better than mine. I did have a hand in choosing it though.

My brother's names are much of a muchness.

My observation is that percentage are usually a little more adventurous in choosing a name for DC2. Probably just get more immune to worrying what other people think. And though I like my name well enough, I think my younger sister got a better deal.

Sorry - parents not percentages!

yes, he'll be very upset and he'll be scarred for life! Grin Grin

a friend did this : named DD1 May, DD2 Amy so they have the same letters in their names and won't get jelaous... WTF?

my DH was dead against the name I wanted for our DS3, but he wouldn't even have it as a 2nd name. I was heartbroken.

our DS4 is called that name

My favourite name for a girl was Anna way before I met DH, but couldn't/wouldn't choose it for DD as her oldest cousin is Anna and same surname.

I came up with DD's name 12 years ago when I was pregnant with DS1.
had 5 boys in a row, so gave up on ever using it, thought 6th will be a boy too!
Actually DH gone off it a few years back, so DS4 and DS5 would have had quite different names had they been girls!

My favourite name is DTD1's middle name- DH didn't like it enough for a first name but indulged me and let me have it as her middle name.

I always preferred my name to my big sister's. Wink

I am the third dd in my family and have by far the most unusual name. I found the list for my naming once, I think it had three girls options and three boys options. i don't know if my name was on the list for my sisters though.

When we were pregnant second time around we spent hours trying to think of a boys name we liked. A few weeks before the birth we finally came up with a great combination, which sadly we will never use as we had dd. She got the girls name we would have used for ds, although we did spend the first few days checking that it fit her. I suspect that was more because we were very surprised!

But this is your favourite name for this dc.

when we were chosing a name for dc2 ( who turned out to be boy number 2) I wasn't thinking- Oh, I wish I could call him ds1's name, I was thinking of names for him ( or her)

ds1 has our favourite name when we were chosing his name.

Ds2 has our favourite name when we were choosing his name- neither is better or worse, they are different ( just like the children!!)

I do like DS1's name better than DS2's, sorry Blush. Not so much that it affects anything at all anywhere in life though - and certainly DS2 is not aware of it & has never asked if his name is second best!

I picked the names I liked the best at the time - no real rhyme or reason.

we only wanted to find out about sex of baby with 5th child, and when they told us it's a boy we burst out laughing and couldn't believe we'd have 5 boys!

had to name him Isaac (meaning laughter)

I'm a third child, but second girl, and yes, my name is afterthought crap. My sister got my mum's maiden name as a first, and it's cute, with meaning. Mine, my mum thought I'd be a boy, so had nothing ready when I showed up pink rather than blue. So she just took the first suggestion my Gran made- no meaning, no one had loved it for ages, plus a filler middle name. Needless to say, my kids' names have each been thought through, and either I have long adored them, or they have significance, or both.
