Help needed deciding on boys name.

Hi all,

Hubby and I spent hours last night vetoing each other's favourite boys names and wittling out the ones we can't have due to knowing people with the same names etc. This has left us with a (very short) short list. Opinions would be very welcome :)

Rupert
Alfred (nn Freddie not Alfie)
Albert (nn Albie or Bertie)
Arthur
Emmett

Also, opinions on our girl name shortlist would also be appreciated :)

Lorelei (nn Rory)
Elizabeth (nn Betty)
Margaret (nn Maggie)
Alice

Rupert - no
Alfred - ok but I love the nn Freddie. Have you considered Frederick?
Arthur - I like it
Emmett - don't like it

Lorelei - ok but don't like Rory
Elizabeth - nice
Margaret - don't like but do like Maggie!
Alice - nice

Congratulations! :)

Love Rupert & Arthur.

Emmett is too 'American-sounding' for my own tastes and what would it be shortened to? Em, perhaps? Your other choices are distinctly masculine so you might want to rethink this one if a clearly male name is important to you.

I like Alfred and Albert but not the nicknames you have suggested. The shine off these two names has also gone for me, as I feel they peaked in the 2000s. Of the two, I prefer Albert. I feel it would be difficult to get people to call your Alfred 'Freddie' when Alfie is the more prevalent and, in many ways, more intuitive nickname.

I can imagine all of your choices on a little baby, boy or man so, while they aren't all ones I'd go for myself, I think your boy will be fine with whichever one you pick!

As for your girls' names, I don't like either Lorelai or Rory. Aren't they the names from the Gilmore Girls, in any case? I would assume a little girl named Rory was named Aurora. Not one for me.

I like Elizabeth but not Betty (I prefer Bessie, Lizzie, Libby); Maggie but not Margaret; and love Alice.

All in all, very sensible lists and I am sure you'll come up with one you and your DH like from them!

Thank you both :)

Finding this so hard as there are plus/negative points for all of them.

Emmett is DH's favourite but not mine is I'm honest. If I had to pick one I think Rupert is my favourite for a boy.

Lorelei was a name on the Gilmore girls, but is an old Germanic name. I don't think the TV show was very popular over here so wouldn't worry too much about the connotation.

Love Rupert and Albert on your boys list

Not at all keen on Lorelei I'm afraid but really like all the others on your girls list

Lorelei (nn Rory) is horrible, sorry. Like all of the other girls' names though but prefer Meg to Maggie.

Boys - love Rupert but don't like the others.

I struggle to think of many names I dislike more than Lorelei to be honest, sorry!

Elizabeth is always a great choice and love Betty as a nn (makes me think of Betty Draper from mad men).

Don't like Margaret- older lady name and not in the fashionable way

Not keen on Alice.

Quite like Rupert and Albert, think I prefer Albert though.

Not sure about Emmett, I quite like Emmerson?

Alice and Alfred.

Rupert: Secretly quite like this. Guy at university shortened it to 'Pertie', which is a bit daft, but there's always Ru.
Alfred (nn Freddie not Alfie): Always like a Freddie.
Albert (nn Albie or Bertie): My grandfather's always been called Albie. Either nickname is good - or just Albert.
Arthur: Love it.
Emmett: Yick. Makes me think of the neighbour in Keeping up Appearances.

Lorelei (nn Rory): Quite an unpleasant stretch as a nickname and such a nice sounding name to begin with, anyway.
Elizabeth (nn Betty): Yes to Elizabeth, but not to Betty. Lizzie? Not Beth - it's wet.
Margaret (nn Maggie): Go for it. At least it gives her options.
Alice: Okay, but a bit dull.

I LOVE Arthur.

Your girls names are all fine. I think my favourite is Margaret, but shortened to Meg.

Rupert - don't like
Alfred (nn Freddie not Alfie) - like Freddie, but prefer Frederik
Albert (nn Albie or Bertie) - quite sweet, like Albie, not Bertie
Arthur - quite nice
Emmett - hahaha, no.

From your list I'd go with Arthur.

Lorelei (nn Rory) - I like this, but it is very Gilmore Girls
Elizabeth (nn Betty) - Love Elizabeth, not keen on Betty
Margaret (nn Maggie) - no
Alice - lovely

I'd go with either Alice or Elizabeth.

Oh and like Elliot as well.

Thanks. Emmett is definitely a no then. I was never keen, was hubby's favourite and I seemed to be vetoing most of his so kept it in!

Lorelei off the list now too. Have added Freya to the short list. Judging by babyname sites this seems to be pretty popular at the minute, although we don't know any...

Rupert - love this. My husband vetoed it completely
Alfred (nn Freddie not Alfie) - don't like this, sorry
Albert (nn Albie or Bertie) - Bertie v cute, not sure about Albie, don't like Albert, sorry
Arthur - gorgeous
Elliot - ok, nothing special

Freya - nice but quite popular
Elizabeth (nn Betty) - really love Betty, but would be worried with Elizabeth that others might choose a nickname that I didn't like!
Margaret (nn Maggie) - not really my taste but ok
Alice - safe but dull

So Rupert or Arthur and Betty for me!

OOoooh I like yr taste Grin

I like Bertie but it didn't go with our surname. I very much like Arthur and Freddie Grin

Not so mad about Emmett but it's very unusual if that helps. Rupert is posh and the only one I have ever known was not so nice.

I know quite a few Alfies and a fair number of Freddies too. Not many Berties or, despite what you always read on MN, Arthurs.

Girls wise I really don't like Maggie for political reasons, no waaaay. Alice and elizabeth are nice.

I prefer yr boys' names actually. That's not v helpful is it.

Just seen yr updates - Freya is pretty popular, well I know at least half a dozen aged 6-13; Elliott is pretty popular too which may of course not bother you.

Alfred (nn Freddie not Alfie) Nicknames are nice
Albert (nn Albie or Bertie) Albie is nice, but not Bertie
Arthur If you call him Artie

^ All fairly similar

Emmett No, sorry MMDH
Elliot Not keen, but not terrible and it seems to be your favourite

Lorelei (nn Rory) Really don't like either
Elizabeth (nn Betty) Like
Margaret (nn Maggie) OK
Alice No
Freya Like it

Like both of your choices with your middle names :)

Emmet is what the Cornish call tourists and isn't complimentary!
I can never get over that Rupert was the neighbours cat.
