I like traditional names - I already have an Elizabeth Amy Grace, an Edward James and a Sarah Elsie Rose - now baby #4 is nearly 6 weeks old, and I've made an appointment with the registrar for Friday, but still undecided on the name (we've just moved house, and its been chaotic to say the least). We think we're set on Charlotte, and we'd like her to have two middle names. My favourite at the moment is:

Charlotte Madeleine Mary

Dh is a bit Hmm about Madeleine because of the Madeleine McCann connection, but the mw that delivered her was called this, and it was her birthday the day she delivered her too, so it just 'fits' in my book. Mary is a family name on dh's side, so I'm not as keen, but thats our kind of compromise, one name we both really like (if you're with me!). I really wanted her to have 'pretty girlie' middle names like Lily, Poppy, Honey etc, but we haven't come up with anything we're both happier with, so just throwing it open to hear what people think before I have to sign on the line on Friday. We've obviously already used up 6 girls names...

Feel really tentative about this but am prepared for the positive and negative responses, just go easy on me please!! Thank you so much for your thoughts.

I like it. Charlotte nice. Madeleineobv has associations but its a middle name and tbh by the time she's at school few will remember :( or at least make the instant association - would you with holly? Personally don't like Mary but that's based on own circumstances. Objectively I can see its a nice, old fashioned name.

Are you happy with dd being called Charlie? Or char?

vamosbebe · 31/10/2012 14:09

Lovely.
My friend Charlotte (aged 36) is also a Charlie - but I never call her anything but Charlotte and neither does her DH.
Lottie is another nn option.
'Char' is revolting!

Charlotte - lovely, traditional, fits with your aother childrens names. Madeleine - I've got one, she's the same age as Madeleine McCann and was small and blond at the time she disappeared (still is), I used to hate calling her name in public - but the association is gone now. Mary goes with them both.

We didn't name our Madeleine til the very last day possible because we couldn't decide either! It was a compromise from both of us but we love it noe and so does she.

I think it's gorgeous, and as others have said as madeleine's the middle name I wouldn't worry about the connection. I tried swapping the middle names round and then realised it sounded a bit like Mary Magdalene - so obviously there are some biblical connotations there...

If you really aren't 100% happy with this combination, how about having Maria instead of Mary? Or Maddalena (Italian for Madeleine) instead of Madeleine?

Other combos of classic/traditional names that sound nice with Mary:
Charlotte Esther Mary
Charlotte Hannah/Anna Mary
Charlotte Rebecca Mary
Charlotte Tessa Mary
Charlotte Isabelle Mary
Charlotte Serena Mary
Charlotte Laura Mary
Charlotte Frances Mary
Charlotte Emma Mary

FWIW I love Madeline and wanted to call DD that but dH wouldn't let me, also due to the mccan reminders Hmm . I'm sure in a few years no one will think about it though and it's not a first name.

Ah, thank you for your lovely comments and good ideas. We originally thought of Charlotte Catherine Mary before she was born, but over the weeks I've wondered if it was a bit 'plain' - sort of not 'pretty' enough? I can't really put my finger on it, but I do love the name Catherine. Some of the other ideas have been used by close family or have negative associations for one reason or another but really like May, Abigail and Anna. Some excellent ideas, I'll show dh this thread later! Smile

I teach a Tekeila, a Fiery and a Cheyenne. Would you not consider any of them?!

I think it is beautiful, and it sounds as if you've got a sense of who she is that is making you want to use that name and not Catharine - I'd say go with it!

Lovely. Your naming taste is great.

I wouldn't use Madeleine as a first name but given the associations I think it is fine in a middle name slot.

Beautiful! Am very jealous that you have an Elizabeth. I only got to use it as a mn.
I know 2 Elizabeth and Alexandra sibling combos. If you want another name thrown into the mix!

Lovely name. Personally I'd go for Catherine (I have a Katherine age 12), but like madeline almost as much - my ds would have been Madeline if he'd been a girl! For a middle name I think you don't have any problems with the connotations and Charlotte is a lovely name.

drseuss do you work in the same learning environment as me? This year I have a Cheyenne, a Karyanne, a Maddylin, a Makayla and 3 Dylan/Dylann/Dillons.

AlfalfaMum · 31/10/2012 14:50

I think they are three lovely names that go together beautifully. Just go with it.

DrSeuss, if I'd had a baby when I was 16 she'd have been called Cheyenne! Luckily I waited and have Isabel.

I really like Charlotte but I'm not so keen on the Madeleine Mary combination, with the repeated M it doesn't seem to flow. Charlotte Eleanor Mary has got more movement I think.
You've given your children lovely names OP!

I love all of your Children's names!

I wouldn't worry about the Madeleine McCann connection to the name Madeleine. I know a Madeleine (I only met her within the last year) and it never occurred to me.

I have a Charlotte, her middle name is Emily :).

See the 'connection' (if there is one) to Madeleine McCann as a positive.

A beautiful name for your DD and the name of a beautiful little girl who some of us will always remember....

Report
happynappies · 31/10/2012 15:34

mignonette, that was sort of how I felt about the name. Its not like your child sharing a name with someone who was a bad person, I suppose it just has sad connotations for some people. Allalonenow I understand about the double M, we wondered about that too. I love love love the name Eleanor but dh won't have it, but will give more thought to breaking up the MM - perhaps I need another name in between??!!

I love it when girls are called Charlie. I would love to have a "male" sounding nickname.

Ah yes, the WTF Names! Personally, I have a Joseph Alan and an Elizabeth Katherine! She was also nearly Elizabeth Rebecca or Elizabeth Charlotte. By the way, as the possessor of a 28 letter name with 2 middle names, are you sure you need the Mary, lovely as it is?
Fiery's middle name is Britania, if you fancy that?!

MrsHBaby3 · 31/10/2012 18:16

Lovely names, although I personally prefer Catherine to Madeline and Maria to Mary, but honestly, its great so go with it. The midwife connection is lovely and you can talk about that if anyone thinks the McCann thing is wierd.
