pugsmum Tue 30-Oct-12 18:16:58

PhyllisDoris Tue 30-Oct-12 18:44:05

Don't like it sad

EdsRedeemingQualities Tue 30-Oct-12 18:44:54

I'm waiting for you to finish typing the name tbh. Is that it?

ChippingInLovesAutumn Tue 30-Oct-12 18:46:41

LOL - I thought you had posted too soon as well. Dre??? WTF?

EdsRedeemingQualities Tue 30-Oct-12 19:16:36

I am sorry. It is actually a good name, I like it in that film (what was that film with the little boy...was it Karate Kid?) but it might not work in the UK as well as it does in the USA. Maybe it would if it were short for something? Like a nickname.

FunnysInLaJardin Tue 30-Oct-12 19:17:51

as in Dr Dre? Not really, a bit too 'rappy' for me

Strikes me as trying a bit too hard to be cool. Don't like it, sorry

musttidyupmusttidyup Wed 31-Oct-12 11:13:06

Yes. Got to say I was surprised at this choice.

squoosh Wed 31-Oct-12 12:03:57

I'd assume you were a Dr Dre fan, then I'd assume you were a 15 year old Dr Dre fan.

I'm sure Dr Dre's actual name is Andre.

Ruprekt Wed 31-Oct-12 12:05:16

Tis truly truly awful!

Shit. Yes. DS2 told me he has a new friend called Dre (actually he said dway) 'Dwayne?' I asked. No. ''Trey'? No. Definitely Dway mummy. grin

birdofthenorth Wed 31-Oct-12 13:24:55

How old is your DS? Must be Trey surely!

musttidyupmusttidyup Wed 31-Oct-12 14:17:58

3. Dre. I checked the tray. Definitely Dre's tray grin not Trey's tray grin

AlwaysHoldingOnToStarbug Wed 31-Oct-12 14:40:52

As a shortened form of Andre it's ok, as a name on it's own no.

Ummofumbridge Wed 31-Oct-12 14:45:37

Maybe he'll aspire to enter the medical profession as he grows.
I have heard of it actually. In 'merica

Leonas Fri 02-Nov-12 19:33:07

A friend of mine teaches a Dre at primary school - it is an inner city Scottish school and the name just doesn't fit!
I think it is awful - trying too hard to be American rappers

BananaPhone Fri 02-Nov-12 19:36:49

I know a few boys called Dre.

It's a perfectly ok name. I prefer it as an NN for Andre rather than as a name in its own right, though.

BananaPhone Fri 02-Nov-12 19:43:40

Also , hmm at all the 'ugh, he'll sound like a rapper' comments.... You don't get loads of 'ugh, he'll sound like a footballer' responses if Jermain is suggested.

Why not say what you mean and say that you don't like it 'cause it sounds black. Black and working class <gasp>. Believe it or not, there are far worse things than being - or sounding - like you are either of those things. Jesus.

I don't agree with you there BananaPhone.

Jermain is a proper name, Dre is an abbreviation of Andre. I have never, ever heard of a Dre pther than Dr Dre, have heard of loads of Jermains. It would be the same to me as if someone called their child Madonna.

TotallyEggFlipped Fri 02-Nov-12 19:52:52

It made me think of DRE (digital rectal examination)
