Baby names

When you and your DP don't agree on names. Any names...

DP is quite strongly into Irish and Welsh names (ie Niamh/Sowsha/Arwyn etc) whereas I really prefer English or Hebrew names. We created seperate lists and there wasn't a single name in common on either list. And frankly when it came to vetoing them....we pretty much hated both of each others lists. Sad

I'm worried I'm going to just cave on one of his names because I don't want to feel like everything is 'all my way'?

Maybe you could see if there are any Welsh/Irish names you like, and visa versa?
You need to find middle ground- I like quite 'out there' names, DH likes more traditional ones. So middle ground for us is solid names that are not widely used at the moment.

A few random suggestions -
Orla
Miriam
Bryony

Arthur
Matthias
Rowan

What about having your choice for first name and his choice for middle name, or the other way round.

Why do you have to "cave" on one of his names? Is everything all your way? If it is, is it really a problem if your DC is given one of "his" names? Can you find some middle ground where there are names that neither of you really dislike?

I'm sure you've considered this already, but whatever name you choose will need to go with your DC's surname, which will surely rule out a few, for example if you're not into alliteration.

If you both hate each other's lists so much then I'd suggest you need to write longer lists! TBH once your DC has a name I think it changes the name somewhat, and a name you might not have previously liked may become far more appealing to you because your child has it, IYSWIM...

Probably not helpful at all, eh? Sorry! [hsmile]

Could you share with us your lists? That might help us see similarities or suggest names you both might like.

We're both Welsh and struggling to find Celtic names we both like. I'm edging towards more English- sounding names and the only one we both like is Alys. Sounds English but Welsh spelling. Other ones we both like, but a bit less are, for girls:-

Anwen (Welsh)
Erin (Irish)
Lynwen (Welsh)

Or for boys:-

Madog (Welsh)
Gethin (Welsh)
Finn (Irish)
Colm (Irish)

TBH our current faves (we're having a girl) are Rosa, Elsa and Elise. I don't really want a non-Welsh name but I'd much prefer to have a name that we both love, rather than a compromise name just because it's Welsh.

How about Elin or Eleni? Not sure if they are Welsh but I knew Welsh girls with those names. My friend's girl is Tegan, pronounced Teg-Ann not Tea-gan if that makes sense! Her boy is Gethin, so it might appeal?
