Now 35 weeks pregnant and can't agree on a single boys' name....HELP!

DC1 is a boy so this is obviously a bit of an issue......

We found it much easier to pick a girl's name pre 20 week scan. But now we're having a DS and can't agree on a name at all

I like Rory. It's the only boys' name I really love. However, DH hates it. I also like Innes but not as much as Rory. DH hates that too. Basically, he hates every Scottish name I suggest as they sound "weird" to him. I suggested Charlie but DH vetoed that as it is the name of an ex of mine.

DH likes William. I hate that and also it's his Dad's name. I'm happy to have it as a middle name but not a first. Also, I want DS to have his own name not be named after family members as a first name.

DH also like Richard -I hate that too.

We can "compromise" on Guy and James but I don't really love either name and now the time is getting closer, I don't really want DS to have a name that I don't love. Jack is also an option. However, we would probably want it to be a shortened version of John or Jonathan. That is DH's name and I think we would sound ridiculous - like we thought we were the Kennedys or similar dynastic family. DH would luuuurve DS to be named after him though as it appeals to his megalomania Wink Grin. Also, I know that Jack is very popular so that puts me of.

I've got a baby name book and am going through it again but can you just suggest your favourite names to me? I'm just hoping that something pops out that I might have missed!

jamie is my favourite from your compromise list.

Rory is lovely, unless he cannot say his Rs.

Rowan is a lovely name

Report
shinyblackgrape · 23/10/2012 23:07

Rowan is nice. DH has already vetoed that though -on the basis it is a "girl's" name. He is normally very reasonable and we have fairly similar taste so I didn't think we'd have such diametrically opposite taste!

I do like Jamie and would shorten James to Jamie. However, DH just advised that he doesn't like Jamie. Just James Hmm Confused

I read 8 baby names books while pregnant last time! And rejected every single name in all of them!

We found a name we both love eventually (DS was one day old).

Of the eight books I read, this was by far and away the best baby name book IMO.

My favourite Scottish boys names are Ossian (pronounced Osh-an) and Inigo, but I'm guessing your DH will think them too weird? Grin

What about James shortened to Jack?

I love the name Rory (if DC3 is a boy that's what he's going to be called). I would say keep on at him, but I know that it's not fair really to use a name the other parent hates.

My favourite boys name is Nicholas (DS's name), but I also like Patrick and Sean. Any good for you?

Since it doesn't seem like your DH will go for a Scottish name, how about one of these classic boys' names?
Adam, Alexander, Andrew, Anthony
Benjamin
Christian, Christopher
Daniel, David
Edmund, Edward, Ernest
Francis, Frederick
George
Harry, Henry, Hugh
Iain, Isaac
Jacob, Jasper, Joel, Joseph, Joshua, Julian
Lee, Leo, Louis, Luke
Mark, Martin, Matthew, Max, Michael
Nathan, Nathaniel, Nicholas
Oscar
Patrick, Paul, Peter, Philip
Raymond, Robert, Rupert
Samuel, Simon, Stanley, Stephen
Theodore, Thomas, Timothy, Tobias
Victor, Vincent
Zachary

Could you name your son Iain/Euan/Ewan/Iwan/Ian/some-other-name-related-to-John and nickname him Jack? I think Jack is fine for a first name though.

We struggled too & loved Rory but my DH was worried that baby wouldnt be able to pronounce his R's :)

We were down to Flynn or Rudy & we went with Flynn. We get loads of lovely comments about his name.

Would you be happy with James if you called him Jamie a lot but DH could stick to James?

What about James/Jim/Jimmy? Or Jem?

Report
shinyblackgrape · 24/10/2012 14:58

Thanks all for the great suggestions am going to run them past DH. DH's nickname is Jonty so that would be out. I'm wondering about John shortened to Jack. That's an option

hedwig -this is first DC so sorry if being thick but it wouldn't be confusing for the baby to be called one thing by me and another by DH?

newmummy -I love Flynn too! Not sure if it goes with our last name though - annoyingly.

auf - that is the book I have. Off to go through it again! I love your suggestions but unfortunately DH (henceforth known as "Mr Beige"!) they would be far too radical Grin

If you can choose James it is quite possible that he will get called Jamie at home as well as many other things that you haven't thought of.I'm amazed by all the pet/nick names that mine get called at home by me & DH but they both know what their "proper " names are

What about Gregory?

Report
shinyblackgrape · 25/10/2012 16:20

Sadly (well happily really) have a nephew called Gregor. Also not keen on Greg as a nickname.

We're going to be the new Chantelle and Alex. Taking 6 weeks to come up with a bog standard name post birth and racing to the registrars on the last day!

How about Keir?

My all time favourite Scottish boy's name! There was a thread on here about it recently with loads of positive comments.

Report
shinyblackgrape · 25/10/2012 16:23

Oh I love keir! DH suggested Keira for a girl - which I don't like but apparently doesn't like Keir [hhmm]. I'm going to keep working on him!
