Baby names

Final two girl/boy names! What do you think of Alice/Anna and Gregory/Jonathan?

Selenium · 22/10/2012 19:43

We already have an Emily and I'm 34 weeks pregnant with number two. We don't know the sex.

Dh and I are very indecisive but I'm pleased to say that after a LOT of discussion, we have narrowed it down to:

Boys:
Gregory
Jonathan

Girls:
Alice
Anna

Please could you let me have your opinions or comments? I'm particularly unsure about the boys' names as neither is very popular at the mo and I'm not sure why as I love them! Would be great to know what others think of these names.

Also, any suggestions for middle names would be lovely as we're now struggling with that...

I like them all

(sorry not much help I know)

I have an Anna and out of my 3 daughters, its the name that I get the loveliest comments about. Alice is nice as well, my husband really liked it.

Gregory is lovely, I don't know any at all, not overly fussed on Greg. Jonathan - I'd go for John, I went to school with a few Jonathans and I think it may have clouded the name for me Grin

We always use grannys/great grannys names as middle names, mind you my grannys name is the same as your daughters Grin.

Thank you for your helpful comments! Nice to know that you like all the names, Sirzy - useful information in itself! And good to know that Anna gets positive feedback from people, Wigglesrock. It is a really pretty, classic name imo and quite underused at the moment.

I guess my only reservation about Jonathan is that it will just be shortened to John anyway. Or he'll be Johnnie (and maybe get teased for that?)

We already used a Granny name for Emily (Grace), which we love, but the other Granny names in our family are all rather long and cumbersome!

Re nicknames, the Jonathan I know was, as a child, often called J or sometimes Jonty but never Jon or Jonnie.

Thanks for your votes! I never thought of the nickname Jonty but quite like that.

I have a Jonathan and it is never shortened. I find, unless you do it yourselves, then no one tends to. My daughter's name, we shortened, regrettably, and now everyone does. Love all your names - especially Jomathan, of course.

I have a Jonathan. He is older now and prefers to be called Jon by his friends but is always Jonathan to me (or Donfan to ds3). He's never been teased about his name (Johnnie etc) and is know occassionally as Jonath.

I have a Jonathan, He's only gone by that name, some people have tried to used the nn Jonny, but it's never stuck. (but he's only 12 so that might change Grin)

I don't know any Jonathans so it's interesting to know what people use as nicknames (or not as the case may be). What middle name do you have for your Jonathan, if you don't mind me asking? I thought of James but the initials don't really work with our surname!

All the Jonathan's I now (of my age) are called Jon by friends.

I have a 2.6 yr old Jonathan. He is known as Jonty or Jonny although ds1(11yrs) calls him Jo-jo. We always get lovely comments ablut his name.

I like both your girls names but if I had to choose then Anna would poss just squeeze in front (I also love Annie)

Our Jonathans middle names are Matiu Ash. Matiu is a Maori name (im 1/2 maori) and Ash was because he was born prem during the Ash cloud (whole story to go with it but takes too long).
His 2nd MN was going to be Alisdair.

I consider myself to be an expert on your boys' names, as I am married to a Jonathan and have a brother called Gregory. From my extensive and life-long experience, I can categorically tell you that people called Gregory are scummy, aggressive bastards who will make your life a misery. Whereas people called Jonathan are delightful, kind, considerate and warm human beings who will enhance your life and make you happy forever. I hope that helps!

(Unfortunately I have no similar wisdom to impart regarding Alice and Anna. Sorry!)

I have a Jonathan! We chose it because it was a less popular name, yet nothing outlandish or faddy. It's also a family name, although this was more of a coincidence.

Middle name is Stewart.

Jonathan is my favorite boys' name Grin. It goes well with Matthew as a middle name IMO.

Of the girls' names I prefer Anna.

You can't have Jonathan Matthew - it would mean 'Gift from God Gift from God'! Jonathan David is much better - it means 'Beloved gift from God'. Awww...

I too am married to a Jonathan, and is lovely Grin He is generally known as Jon, but Jonathan to his family (which he used to insist on as a boy) he is never Jonnie or Jonty. His middle name is Paul. Anna and Alice are lovely and were both high on our list of names for our last baby. But didn't want Alice as too close to Alison (MIL and didn't want her thinking baby was named after her!)

I like both Alice and Anna.

I love Gregory, but DH refused to even contemplate naming DS Gregory. Apparently it "sounds gay" Hmm Although I have since found out that one of BIL's sons from his first marriage is called Gregory, so maybe it's just as well that DH vetoed it. Despite my objection to his reasoning.

Jonathan is also a nice name. All of the Jonathan's I know are either Jonathan or Jon.

Our boy name was Gregor - the Scottish equivalent.
And Anna was on our short list. If we have another girl at some point she may be an Anna.
I like easy to sound out and spell names for when they start to write their own names.

I like Alice, DD1 knows a couple one 14 like her and one 18. I don't know any baby Alice's so not too common.

Anna is pretty, but always feels just a bit dull.

Although this may be because the Anna I know's older sister is something slightly unusual and the pairing feels odd.

Emily and Anna works much better.

My two DDs are a similar pair of very traditional names.
