I think we have a first name - still need advice!

I think we have decided on the first name Jarvis for our third son due in March. Now we're tossing up between two middle names, both of which have very close family significance.

Jarvis Christopher
- Christopher is my dad, still very much living

Jarvis Aubrey
- Audrey was my nana, who passed away tragically when I was 7 - my dad's mum - whose birthday baby will be born on.

I'm aware that the 'is' is repeated in the first combination but am not overly concerned about it as it's not a terrible sounding combo and the 'i' is pronounced differently.

The question is, do I honour someone living, or someone no longer with us? What would you do?

Not sure. I'm afraid I'm not at all keen on any of those names. I think I'd choose the name I liked best rather than worrying about who you should honour.

I think Aubrey is great. How do you know what day the baby will be born on though? Not keen on Jarvis, but I like Christopher. The qu is have you 'honoured' dh's dad in any way? If this is your third ds, do their middle names have any significance?

I prefer Christopher out of all your names - what about Christopher Jarvis instead? Kit is great as a nn! Otherwise, I think Jarvis Aubrey sounds better of the two.

My kids both have 2 mns to honour family members both still with us and no longer with us fwiw..

We are set on Jarvis and love it much more as a first name than Christopher - which was on my list for a first name with nickname Kit, but my husband won't agree to it because I would insist on the nickname Kit, never Chris - so out it goes.

I'm not really fussed if people don't like Jarvis - we do and that's all that matters. My DH is set on Wolfgang and there's no way that's happening!

My husband's family was honoured with both our first children so it's well and truly my family's turn smile

I am having a c-section which is already booked for my grandmother's birthday smile

Great names and lovely that you're honoring loved family members. I would go for Jarvis Aubrey as it flows better and your des will share Aubrey's birthday.

I adore Jarvis! It was on my list too. I like either combo (helpful) but I think to honour your still living dad is a little more special. He would feel really chuffed.

My DS has my dads name as a middle name as he died when I was 10 so perhaps a bit biased. But Jarvis Christopher is great.

Jarvis Christopher Aubrey? Why not both names?

Hedwig3 Tue 23-Oct-12 09:28:35

Jarvis Christopher Aubrey does sound great.

Having a special Birthday surely means he can have a special second middle name smile

If you only want 1 i'd choose your dad's name, I think it is nice for the baby to have the name of someone who will be in his life.

Jarvis is just lovely smile I prefer it with Christopher, and I imagine your Dad would be delighted.

In answer to your question, OP, I would go with Jarvis Aubrey. It's a lovely way to honour our Nana and, as Audrey was your Dads' Mum, you're honourif him aswell. Jarvis Aubrey flows better than Jarvis Christopher - as you say, too many 'iss' sounds.

If it were me, though, I'd name the baby Aubrey Christopher. Both are much nicer names than Jarvis, IMO.

Hi I don't like Jarvis sorry but prefer Jarvis Aubrey to Jarvis Christopher. Love the nickname kit though. Incidentally I know a baby Wolfgang, he's known as wolf and it really suits him smile his mum gets loads if positive comments.

I'd go with Jarvis Christopher for your Dad who is still around to be absolutely thrilled by the honour.

Some great advice, thanks!

And nice to see a little Jarvis love - brothers are Felix and Theodore.
