Mildred and Mabel

I think Mabel is v cute and works old/young. Need a twin name that works. Is Mildred known as Mills/Red a big no or a maybe??? For my SIL. She is avoiding top 100 (almost impossible IMHO). Thanks.

Mabel is OK but Mildred is ugly. Both taking old lady chic a bit far IMO.

Mabel and Marie?
Mabel and Marielle?

Awful. Could just about cope with Mabel

Mabel would work well for a little girl. It's similar to Ruby/Alice/Edith/Kitty/Pearl - traditional but not frumpy. Mildred however falls into the other category of 'old lady names' along with Gertrude, Edna, Fanny etc., all best left in the 1900s.

Some other ideas if she wants an 'M' name...

Marguerite
Mahala
Milly
Mirella
Mia
Maya

Not a fan. Not sure why top 100 is being avoided to be honest, that seems rather excessive to me!

Mabel's not too bad but could easily be the next big thing as folk search out for different old lady names.

I don't like either of them but Mildred is much worse than Mabel. Mildred goes with Ethel, Hilda and Gertrude, ie, should not be used IMO.

Don't like either. Mildred is hideous.....

Is she set on 2 'M' names? 2 Miss M Surnames could get confusing when they get post later on.

I love Mabel but don't love Mildred, I think the combination could push Mabel from cute into frumpy.

Lily would be nice but suspect it's well in the top 100.

Mildred sounds like a combination of mildew and dread. Not very keen on Mabel either.

Report
Bluestocking · 07/10/2012 15:53

Does it have to begin with M? It's very twee having twin names that begin with the same letter.

Mildred is dreadful. Grin at YouMayLogOut. Not desperately keen on Mabel either, but if you are fixed on it and want an 'M' name how about Molly?

Mabel ok. Mildred - I would think most would hate it.

How about Millicent? Still not lovely, but can shorten to Millie if wanted. Also more old-timey than fugly, if you get my drift Wink

Or Margaret? Is that too normal? Maggie/Meg are nice shortenings.

I really like maggie.

I don't like Mildred at all, sorry. Mabel isn't great- Maybelle is better. Twins are great though!!

I don't like the idea of giving twins matchy names personally.

Really don't like either, sorry.

It's unanimous then Grin. Wonder what the reaction would've been to her only boys name with either of these. (George)

I quite like Mildred but I wouldn't go for two M names. Asking for confusion.

Report
katiecubs · 07/10/2012 19:45

Mildred just sounds so miserable. I would go with Mabel but not too keen on that either.

Report
badtime · 07/10/2012 19:54

If I wanted a name to 'match' Mabel, I would go for something like Isabel, which sounds different and has a different initial, but shares the -abel ending.

Milly and May are pretty cute names for twin toddlers girls.

But once the are adults and called Mildred and Mabel you are into crazy maiden aunt territory. Not so good.
