Baby names

Is Sebastian too predictable with my other boys' names?

About a year ago I was obsessed with having a Sebastian - DH hated it, would never consider it.

Now that a third boy is actually growing inside me and I cast it off the list long ago because of DH's aversion. Then last night he picked up a baby name book for the first time and came across Sebastian and said "Well that's not too bad, add it to the list." You could have knocked me down with a feather!

So now it's a possibility I find myself worrying about it extreme popularity and - to be honest - predictability with my other boys' names - Felix and Theodore.

My other choice is Christopher as it's my dad's name, but he would only be called Kit, never ever Chris or Christopher.

So do you agree with my concerns? Is Sebastian yawn-worthy or fabulous? Is Kit better?

Sebastian is a bit yawn worthy, Kit is much better. Are there no other names on your list?

I really like kit for Christopher and if this may be your last son it would be nice to have a family name

Christoper would go in the middle, regardless, so family is always in there :)

Thanks for the feedback so far :)

Stonefield - yes I have a wonderful shortlist but DH will not agree to any of them. They are:

Augustin (Gus)
Cato
Alistair
Reuben

Unfortunately it takes two to name a baby :(

Christopher is much nicer than Sebastian. Kit is also a much nicer nickname than Seb or Basty IMO.
How about Clement, Quentin or Caspar?

Love love Kit. Sebastien is a good solid name, that being said I do know quite a few.

What about Jasper?

Oh I wanted a Sebastian or a Jasper if I had boys - had all girls though. Christopher nice too.

Sebastian and Christopher are both great classic names.

Sorry but I really dislike Kit, it's faddy and twee IMHO. Kitten, Kit Kat, P.E. kit, first aid kit. Chris is much nicer and more substantial.

Felix, Theodore and...

Henry
Alexander
Benedict
Peter
Nathaniel
Jerome
Elias/Eli

Not a Sebastian fan but it does go with your other names. I prefer Christopher, and Kit sounds cute with Felix and Theo. Wondered if Isaac (Ike) would be nice too.

I like Sebastian but love Kit and I think it would be much more interesting whereas Sebastian is a bit yawn worthy!

I love Sebastian! And he will love the story of how his name went in and out of fashion round at your house. Go with it - how could such a great name be yawn worthy? Don't forget, the internet can make anything seem yawn worthy ;-)

Well I am going to be unhelpful and like them both.

Kit is very nice. It has a small edge for me. Seb/Sebbie is nice too. Not a fan of Basty.

Your other two have nice meanings to the names, so how about
Benedict (blessing)
David (beloved)
Dominic (lord)
Matthew, Jonathan (same meaning as Theodore)

Sebastian was on my short-list too, but I didn't like Seb or Baz and people will shorten it, so ... we went for Christopher. He's known as Christo, which really suits him.

LOVE Kit. Not very used either. In fact, never met a child called it and I am a teacher. Not keen on Sebastian- reminds me of bastard.

I think both are fine.

When you say he would never ever be known as Chris(topher)...why not? What if he wants to be? What's the point of giving a name no one is allowed to use?

Felix and Kit makes me think of cats.

Report

That's fine, we adore cats! :)

Ephiny - of course he could make his own decision when old enough but I'm saying if in infancy or toddlerhood anyone called him Chris, they would be corrected. As a parent I'm allowed to choose his nickname :)

My Theodore is never called Teddy, nor does anyone call him Ted. Anyone who has tried is politely corrected. Simple. I am a Suzanne - just try to call me Sue - won't happen. I don't subscribe to the belief that people will call someone what they will and no-one has any control over it. If he's Kit, he's Kit, unless he decides different later on :)

I have a Benedict, and I wanted DS2 to be Sebastian, but this was vetoed on the grounds that Benedict and Sebastian sounded like they ran an antiques shop in Brighton. Wish I'd stuck to my guns! I love Kit too but have a brother with this name. And Felix and Theodore are gorgeous.
