Reuben - Do you think people will call my ds Ruby instead of his actual name?

The name we both love is Reuben but I'm worried that people will shorten it to Ruby shock. Is this crazy pregnancy hormones? I'm talking about the majority of people and I don't think you can protect them from everything!

Nope, if any thing then Rubes.
It's a lovely name, my dd has a name with a school nickname that's NOTHING like her name, you never know how it'll ge

I call my friend Ruben, Ru or Rubes. Dp calls him ben.

honeytea Sat 06-Oct-12 10:56:42

I have a friend called Rueben and he gets called rue. I think it's a lovely name smile

HecateHarshPants Sat 06-Oct-12 10:58:58

No. I think it's more likely to be rube, rubes, ru, ben, benny, stuff like that.

It's really not very common to cross gender in name shortening, if that makes any sense.

MardyBra Sat 06-Oct-12 10:59:17

I can't see it being shortened and it's a lovely name.

I call my friend rueby baby and he loves it!

pepperrabbit Sat 06-Oct-12 11:37:52

The little boy I know is called Rue by everyone - never even occured to me that he might be called Ruby confused

MoelFammau Sat 06-Oct-12 11:56:16

Roo. Though I knew one called Rubes and he got 'Pubes' at school.....

NulliusInBlurba Sat 06-Oct-12 12:17:20

I think it's unlikely in the UK. A family we know has a DS Reuben and they shorten it to Ruby, but they don't speak English so it has different connotations for them (ie not known either as a jewel or a female name).

PurplePidjin Sat 06-Oct-12 12:26:44

My nephew is Reuben, only shortened to Ruby in the context of Rooby Dooby Doo to make him giggle! (he's 5)

YouMayLogOut Sat 06-Oct-12 12:27:14

I haven't heard any nicknames for Reuben.

Pinkflipflop Sat 06-Oct-12 12:33:59

A relief, thanks for the opinions!!

Going to stick with Reuben, now I just need a middle name!

MolotovBomb Sat 06-Oct-12 14:59:16

I know a 4yo Ruben (not spelled Reuben but pronounced the same) and he is NNd Rube or Rubes. It doesn't seem right to NN a boy Ruby (unless you wanted to, of course).

Reuben is my 2nd favourite boys name: second only to Gabriel.

Good luck!

Stumbleine Sat 06-Oct-12 16:05:18

My ds is Reuben and we call him 'Roo' (on a good day grin ).

MrsJohnDeere Sat 06-Oct-12 16:06:00

Ones I know get called Roo or Rubes.

MadStaringEyes Sat 06-Oct-12 18:29:42

Ruby Walsh is a Reuben. I really like it as a nn, not keen on it as a girls name.

olliesmum234 Sat 06-Oct-12 21:17:19

You can't control nickname once they're at school. Reuben may well get shortened to Roo, Rooby, Roobs, but I think all are cute nicknames personally.

CointreauVersial Sat 06-Oct-12 21:18:47

DD1 has a mate called Reuben, and he's just.....Reuben. No-one shortens it.

YoullLaughAboutItOneDay Sat 06-Oct-12 21:20:44

I know three, none have it shortened to Ruby. Some of the families say 'Roo', but not more widely.

AlwaysHoldingOnToStarbug Sat 06-Oct-12 21:44:00

I have an 8 year old Reuben and I call him Roo, Rooly or Roobarb but no one else shortens his name.

TiggerWearsATriteSmile Sat 06-Oct-12 21:55:41

madStaringEyes your info is incorrect. Ruby Walsh is actually a Rupert.

I know a Reuben, he is Reuben or Benny! Go figure. smile

The Reuben we know gets called Rubes - love it!
