lisaro Mon 01-Oct-12 19:55:39

The correct one. Louis. Don't try to be 'yoonique'.

halloweeneyqueeney Mon 01-Oct-12 19:56:30

Love the name. But be prepared for people who pronounce it as Lewis!

Badgerina Mon 01-Oct-12 20:11:32

Louis. I agree that people might pn it Lewis, but they'd be idiots so... grin

MJandherdog Mon 01-Oct-12 20:15:34

It's Louis.

Viviennemary Tue 02-Oct-12 08:40:37

There is only one correct version. That is Louis.

CherryBlossom27 Tue 02-Oct-12 08:43:28

I prefer Louis out of those two spellings. I have a Lewis but it's pronounced differently and haven't had any confusion with Lewis/Louis.

SomersetONeil Tue 02-Oct-12 09:11:46

Louis - lovely name. Don't go down the Louie route.

LouMacca Tue 02-Oct-12 09:33:07

Louis, without a doubt.

evamummy Tue 02-Oct-12 11:17:40

Louis = Lou-is
Lou-ie = Lou-ie

So it depends on how you want it pronounced. Yes, I know the French don't pronounce their 's' at the end of words/names but the rest of the world do and will pronounce Louis as Lou-is.

evamummy Tue 02-Oct-12 11:20:27

"Louis. I agree that people might pn it Lewis, but they'd be idiots so... "

Well, then there are a lot of idiots in the world because apart from the French most langugages pronounce the s of Louis. For example, the city of St Louis in Missouri is pronounced St Louis, not Lou-ee.

My (German) nephew is Louis and pronounces it Lou-is as written. Seems quite popular in Germany.

I guess here (in the UK) some people prefer to pronounce it the French way (Lou-ie) but a lot of people won't, so you have to be prepared for the two pronounciations if you spell it Louis.

By spelling it Louie, an English speaker will clearly, unambiguously know how it should be pronounced.

badtime Tue 02-Oct-12 11:50:06

I am pretty sure most people pronounce Louis as 'Louie', even in the UK. I used to work with someone called Louis and someone called Lewis, and nobody ever got them mixed up.

sonniebonnie Tue 02-Oct-12 14:28:01

Outside of France, most people do pronounce Louis as Lou-is. So if you don't like that pronunciation, I'd spell it Louie.

Badgerina Tue 02-Oct-12 14:50:50

hmm No they don't.

Anyone see that recent episode of The Thick of It where Peter Mannion stumbles over a "foreign-sounding" name? How much of an idiot did he seem?
