Your last name was knight? Nice, ordinary name or opportunity for p*ss taking on Academy Awards night?!

Took me a minute to get that....

But I probably wouldn't use it.

I wouldn't. I love Oscar but I wouldn't use it with that surname.

i would. i don't think it matters at all.

Sorry but I wouldn't. Just thinking about your ds giving his name over and over again and some people possibly thinking he was taking the piss. Sounds like a clever pseudonym.

There are lots of other nice names that go well with Knight......

It's a nice name but Oscar Knight is a little Hmm but not too bad. I am undecided.
I didn't hint of The Oscars when I first read the opening post.

Absolutely no way.

Poor lad wouldn't get a break as soon as any realised :(

Thanks for the replies everyone. I feared everyone would say no way but seems it's a bit more of a mixed bag. Love the name Oscar, and being named after a fabulous Paralympian would be pretty cool, but the whole 'Oscar Night' thing bothers me a bit. I thought we had an easy, go-with-anything surname, but it's really tricky! We like solid, traditional, unfussy names for boys (we don't know what we're having, but girl names are sorted) so... any suggestions for things which sound good with Knight?

Felix?
Hugo?
Sebastian?
Theo?

I think Oscar Knight is fine. It's not a frequent enough event to be a thing, IYSWIM. It's not like Holly Day for a girl. Or Tuesday Knight. Grin

I have given this further thought and now think I do think Oscar Knight is a great name. Especially when said with a hard 'K' sound in Oscar.

yes, I have too much time on my hands

I knew an Oscar Knight and never heard it as 'Oscar night' like that until reading this thread. And I've known of him for about 16 years!

Thanks all. Looks like the no's outnumber the yes's by about 3-1. Still wavering however. Totally mindful of the issues that some - but obviously not all - can see with it, but agree that its not exactly in Ben Dover or Theresa Green territory either!!! We also like Henry and George so that's our three name short list. It's bound to be a girl now we've agonised over a boys name so much! A girl would be Rosa by the way.

Oh god it took me about 3 minutes to get that dim

Erm yes I'd use it. I've got an Oscar he's 13 today Smile he loves his name.

I too have an Oscar so I would vote yes. I don't think it's a bad match with the surname at all.

shoobidoo · 11/09/2012 22:18

It's when you say it (Oscar night) rather than read it (Oscar Knight). I wouldn't, sorry.

I have an 18 year old Oscar too (middle name) we were told it sounded like a dogs name. (Admittadly the nieghbours and my SIL's dogs were both called Oscar Hmm ) but he was actually named after the main character in The Tin Drum by Gunter Grass
