Baby names

Everyone hates my favourite girls name :-(

I have loved the name Aurelia for years and have always thought I would name my daughter it. Now I'm pregnant and I tell people potential names (I know, I know I shouldn't) I am getting not very positive reactions.

Apparently it's 'too bling', footballer's wife-esque, sounds like Israeli(?!), is chavvy and many more other interesting and varied but generally negative comments about it.

Should I ignore people and go for it (assuming baby is a girl!) or is it an ill-judged, ridiculous name? What do you mumsnetters think of it?

I think it is a lovely name! I've never heard of it being associated with chaviness and the people you know must pronounce Israel in a very funny way if they think it sounds like that. Does DH like it?

I like it. Doesn't it mean 'Dawn' in some or other language? Also, lovely Portuguese girl in Love Actually. I don't think it is chavvy or any of those other things. Just use it if you like it!

I think it means golden-haired in Latin doesn't it? Aurora means dawn, Bike.

I like it. I love Aurelie as well.

It is a perfectly normal name (at least in France). I prefer "aurelie" just because the ones I meant are nicer than the "aurelia"s. It is nothing like "too bling', footballer's wife-esque, sounds like Israeli(?!), is chavvy" Confused
If you like it use it.

Is it possible that the people you have spoken to aren't familiar with it and think it's a 'made-up' name?
I have seen that with some well known names - even on this site - with names like Emilia and Elinor.

I know an Aurelia. It took some getting used to, but now I like it. And it suits her, she is beautiful with lovely curls Smile

Aurelia is a beautiful name, it's one I've got in mind if we have another DC. You'll always get people hating the name you've chosen but it's your baby, your decision.

How are you pronouncing it? Aw-reel-ea, Aw-reel-a, Aw-reel-yah? On first look I'd pronounce it Aw-reel-ea but a quick look online suggests the Yah sound is correct.
I love it. It's a perfectly lovely name, pretty and not over used. I'd ignore the pessimism, it's generally best to ignore the advice of anyone who still uses the term 'chav' to judge people by.

I don't see it as either "bling" or "chavvy" - I just think of Marcus Aurelius when I hear it. But that's my issue and I think it's a nice name. It's a very old (Latin) name.

I pronounce it au-ray-lee-ah

Thanks people. I really love it and will probably regret it if I listen to other people and don't use it

YY, just use it! Sod other people, in the end, it will become who your DD is and people will cease to scoff/ridicule it, I'm sure. :)

I love it! One of my favourite girls names. :)

Use it, sod what anyone else thinks! Don't tell them the name before she is born then they can't comment, just say "oh we haven't decided yet!" When the baby is here they'll be so busy cooing they won't be so rude to say that they don't like it. When they love your baby they will grow to love the name because they will think of her, iyswim.

My DM didn't like any of her GCs names before they were born. She never said, bless her, but she kept contributing ideas in the hope that we'd change. Now that they're here she loves their names because she associates it with them.

Its a lovely name. I know an Aurelia. She's lee for short.

Ignore what others say. Once you name your daughter they're hardly going to be able to say anything are they.

I love it.

The people who were rude about it sound a bit ignorant to me

Ah I love it. I told people what we were planning to call DS and wished I hadn't, they nearly put me off it. It's an unusual but lovely name and seemed to split people into two camps - tose who really loved it and those who hated it. Or who knew a dog that had been called it, Hmm that was a common one.

Anyhoo we went ahead with it because we liked it and I'm so glad we did, it really suits him, and no one is rude once the baby is actually here and named! Go for it.

I think it sounds nice.

I also think of the Portuguese woman in Love Actually.

It's lovely! Don't talk about names in real life! People are rarely as rude once the baby's here Smile

just don't tell people the names people, for goodness sake!!!

Just tell them the names as a FACT, after the birth, and they'll ahve to be polite.

People might just not be liking your pronunciation rather than the more usual pronunciation of the name.

Love it - immediately thought of the Love Actually film - one of my favourites!!

It's a beautiful name!

Ignore the naysayers.

And anyway they'll see the name differently once they actually know your DD.
