Gloria

I have just received a phone call from a friend's DP. She's just had a healthy girl of 7lb and, after seeing the baby, has decided on the name Gloria.

I was like Confused 'sorry did you say Glorious?'. 'No', he said, 'Gloria'.

I can't help but feel this is an absolutely horrendous name for a newborn girl. What do other people think? And do I say something to this effect before they register it?

No, say nothing. It's a name.

The only comment I had about Gloria, before I opened the thread and found you plotting to change a baby's name, was that it reminded me of one of the later baddies in the Buffy/Angel ouvre. Not an insurmountable problem, really.

No, your wretched plan will fail, you evil genius.

Seriously, don't say anything if you value your friendship.

What's wrong with Gloria??? Confused

It's a great, gutsy name. Not in fashion but is that a bad thing?

And why would you give them advice to change their mind before registering? Sheesh.

It IS awesome. I love it.

Friends recently named their baby girl Doris. Gloria is nicer IMO.

'glorious' would be much 'worse' surely?

Nowt wrong with Gloria, and nothing you can do anyway so keep schtumn if you value your friendship.

I think it has a certain retro charm, as well as rock and roll cred. I would put it in the same category as names as Betty and Marilyn.

i don't mind it! it is no different from sylvia or celia imo which 5 years ago were being pasted on here.

I've come to like it. And it's very appropriate this year.

You're not really considering saying that you think it's horrendous, are you?

Gloria is a fantastic name - feminine yet strong sounding. And not (yet?) overused!

G-L-O-R-I-A

If it's good enough for Van Morrison, it's good enough for me.

It's not a name I'm particularly fond of, but then, there's plenty of far worse names out there.

And no, if you value this friendship, do not tell your friend or her DP that you feel this is an absolutely horrendous name.

Because:

a) they must obviously love it or they wouldn't have picked it.

b) if you say that you hate it, they will be offended. Possibly very very seriously offended.

c) they're very unlikely to change their baby's name just because you hate the name.

Gloria! One of my most favourite names. Definitely love it and I'm jealous they get to name their kid that.

It's a busty barmaid's name.

She'll have the Patti Smith song as her anthem for the rest of her life. So that in itself lends a little bit of awesome Grin

tethersphotofinish · 04/08/2012 00:42

it's a Van Morrison song

photifinish it may well be. The Patti Smith cover however is a million shades more awesome, since it's Patti Smith and she is a goddess. Van the man is a dude, but if Gloria was my friend's daughter, I know version I'd be playing her Grin

I know a Gloria aged 25. She's absolutely stunning and very clever. The name really suits her!

It's an awful name, I quite agree. But you know you can't really say anything, don't you?

Wow! I love Gloria. Beautiful name. You cannot seriously think that saying something to a woman who has just given birth to a beautiful baby is a good idea.
I would be furious (someone said same to me about dd2's name in postnatal ward, and it still pisses me off 7 years later)
