Casper

One of a short list of two at the moment. We both like it, think it is DH's favourite, but I am worried about:

• it being regarded as pretentious in Britain (not British so not quite sure but I think I have read that on here)
• there being multiple spellings. I like.the e for some reason.

Not too concerned about the friendly ghost connection.

What do you think?

its lovely! my fabulous nephew is called Caspar, i prefer the spelling like that, but the ghost connection is neither here nor there and its certainly not pretentious!

It's a brilliant name, not pretentious and I would always spell it Caspar. I think the majority would.

Thanks! Glad it is not pretentious! Is Caspar the more common spelling in Britain? If we went for Casper would we be saying 'with an e' all the time?

I believe it is Caspar in the UK, Casper in the US, at least that is what DH gets.
I thought though that it was the 70-80's Tarquin? MIL will be pissed if I tell her it is 'common' happy about that :o

BUT I do hear the theme to Casper the friendly ghost in my head every time I hear it. Only you know if that bothers you or not really.

Gorgeous name. I have an Oscar already which I think sounds similar, otherwise DS2 would be Caspar (with an a).

Hi, someone in my baby group in 1996 called her son this, it was lovely when he was a cute baby, but he gets the p*ss taken big time now he is at secondary school and not a cute chubby baby. Not common though if you want something different.

Seems that names start as 'posh' but then become quite mainstream. Names like Casper, Sebastian, Quentin, Theodore were all considered 'posh' 10 years ago but are now quite 'normal' imo.

The only negative I can see with Casper, apart from the multiple spellings (Caspar, Kaspar, Kasper) is that in Germany/Austria a Kasper is a very well known clown figure, so has very comical associations.
