Mercedes?

I'm starting to really like this name. And of course it always was a girl's name (the car being named after someone's daughter).

But is it actually possible to get past the whole car business? Would you be subjected to a lifetime of uninformed people hoiking up their judgey pants?

I really like the name but i think it would be hard to get away from the car connotations. For some reason I think the only way to pull off the name Mercedes would be if you're a 6ft supermodel with long black hair...

I think you should stick with liking it and maybe look for some other names just to spare your daughter a lifetime of annoying comments.

Agree with the others, instantly start thinking of BMW etc.

Mercedes is a lovely name, but could you cope with the nickname Merc?

I imagine that the name would work much better in Spain than in the UK.

I take it you are either a car fanatic or a massive fan of Hollyoaks or you just like the Mercedez Benz song

"Oh Lord won't you buy me a Mercedez Benz".

I think the nn would be Mercy

Report
DawnOfTheDee · 27/07/2012 09:31

If the nn is Merc that's probably not great as merc is a slang word with a few meanings...none of them good.

I'd have thought "Sadie" would be a more obvious nickname for Mercedes.

  1. a bit
  2. certainly not - I'd rather have a leg off than watch Bolloaks
  3. s'okay

But yes, this is the kind of thing people would assume. Still a nice name though (goes back to thinking about 6ft tall supermodels with long black hair)

I don't mind it actually. Not one I'd pick myself, but Sadie and Mercy are quite nice NNs.
I'd just assume the parents were Spanish probably.

I think Sadie and Mercy are lovely names in their own right and perhaps the better option

if your so damn touchy and harrumphing about uninformed and hoiking of pants I'd suggest avoid the bbbrrrmmm brrrmm name

Are you Spanish? If not I think it will sound a little odd, personally.

Do you not like Mercy as a name?

Report
Paiviaso · 27/07/2012 12:23

I don't think of the car, I think of tarty Mexican girls with oiled hair yelling, "Oy chica, did you touch my man?"

But since we are not in California I suppose most people will think of the car first...just curious, are you actually Hispanic?

If it helps, the "official" nickname in Spanish for a Mercedes is Merche, the "che" pronounced like " chair" but with a shorter vowel if that makes sense

I think it would be lovely in Spain - not sure about here though.

Mercedes is one of those names I really like but would never use.

Its a sort of 'aspirational' name, and the phrase why have a dog and bark yourself comes to mind, people will just think you were obsessed with Mercedes but couldn't have one/think it will make your daughter 'classy'. Am not saying thats the case but thats what comes to mind with Mercedes in this country anyway.

I always think of Mercy as quite an African name, along the lines of Gifty, Goodness etc.

Sadie I love.

Further suggestions:

Porsche (I'm sure this is a name)
Ferrari (like the woman with the enormous breasts?)
Sharan (this is definitely a name and is also a Volkswagen)
Campervan (another Volkswagen)
Bongo (Mazda)

And no, I'm not Spanish but I didn't think that mattered.

Mercedes Ruehl isn't Spanish either, and she is only fractionally of Cuban heritage.

Hmm, that is a bit hypocritical, you were the first to be rude about assuming anyone who didn't like your name choice was 'uninformed'!

Btw, how would you pronounce it? Most people I know anglicize the car name ('mer-say-dees'), but my DH's best mate, who's Spanish, would pronounce the name a bit differently, with a sort of sibillance to the middle syllable. I'd say that's the correct pronounciation for the girl's name, since that has not been anglicized, but maybe it doesn't matter.
