Timeless boys names

In response to the existing thread regarding timeless or classic girls names, what about boys names? What are classic and timeless names? I find them so much harder than girls....

I am thinking possibly Nicholas, Michael, Thomas, Christopher....??

A lot of these re very cyclical names.

Who's calling their babies Nicholas, David, Richard, Christopher, Andrew and Anthony at the moment?

Old names, sure; solid names, definitely, but timeless? No.

Some people would even argue that William and Thomas are cyclical names, which are currently undergoing a resurgence, making them appear timeless because they're popular right now and people can't imagine them being anything but popular. I didn't grow up with any Georges, either. And even Michael isn't very widely used right now.

I think Matthew is definitely timeless, as is James. Otherwise, I think it's - once again, and as with girls' names - slightly left-field, unpopular names which are the most timeless.

Rafe
Ewan
Hamish
Angus
Robert
Daniel (although not sure about this one)
Benjamin
Hugh / Hugo

And Duncan, and Adrian, and Gavin.
Rafe and Hugo, although maybe not as popular as some, are in my mind posh names.

Angus

are all lovely, classic and never super trendy imo.

Some of the names mentioned have been very 'fashionable' during various periods e.g. Steve, Andy & Mike in the 1970s and Tom, Will and Edward currently.

Timeless boys' names that are never trendy (and therefore never sound dated) include imo

Jonathan
Matthew
Fergus
Angus
Gregory
Quentin
Benedict
Constantine

Agree that some of the names mentioned above (esp Michael, Andrew, Chris) may not be fashionable right now but have been and are therefore not 'timeless'. A timeless name imo is one that is never really trendy and so therefore doesn't date a person to an era.

A good test might be: when you hear someone's name, can you easily guess the age of the person (without looking at him, obviously Grin)? If yes, it is not a timeless name imo.

Philip. It's not too popular for babies at the moment. But it's been going for hundreds of years.

I have done a fair bit of family history research and these names are the ones that will pop up somewhere in each generation. But IMO still sound fresh and are popular today.

Some names like Harry very trendy currently, probably like Steve or Andy was in the 1970s.
