Baby names

A name or a shortlist....?

For DS1 we had a name ready, but this time around DH doesn't want to commit - he thinks we should have a shortlist and decide when DC is born. What worked for you? If you had a short list did you just "know" which name was right when you saw your newborn? I'm really quite keen to pin down a name in case we don't agree afterwards! (Not sure if this should be in chat really - sorry of this is the wrong place to ask.)

I am definitely a short list person. I had one for DS that included 2 names (out of about four IIRC) that didn't suit him at all!
I am preg with Dc2 and although I admit I have a favourite name I still think of DD as being without a name until she is born. And possibly for a few days after! Have a shortlist of about 5 names. It's nice leaving it open IME- it leaves a surprise/mystery for after the birth, especially if you know the gender.

Shortlist definitely.

Secretly both times I knew what my prefered name was but I didn't want to name the baby before he/she arrived. Then after each of our DDs were born and the midwife asked 'does she have a name?' I turned to DH and he was happy to go along with the one I suggested.

I was determined if I ever had a son to name him after my Dad. DH did put up a bit of resistance as he preferred other names. But I got my way. I know this probably is quite right but that's what happened.

I meant isn't quite right. Guilty conscience.

I'm such an impatient girly!! I want to know RIGHT NOW what he/she will be called, nevermind waiting till after delivery. Although I do see that it adds an extra element of excitement. Oh what to do, what to do!

We had a preferred name with dd1 from very early on but didn't officially name her until she arrived. She suited her name perfectly. This time we've really struggled and oh has had final say. We do refer to bump by name because we didn't want to confuse dd1 (two) though we have a backup just in case

Do you have any children already who might have an opinion? I think I was responsible (aged about 4) for naming my little brother... when he was born I told everyone at my nursery that he had the name given to the baby in the 'we're-having-a-baby' story book that my parents had bought to prepare me for having a sibling! I'm still not sure whether they were planning to call him that anyway but it soon became his name Hmm

So anyone buying a book to prepare children for a new arrival... make sure the baby isn't named (or it's a name you like)!

shortlist! We had 2 names for both our children and somehow when they were born there was an obvious choice each time. That was either some weird suiting the name moment or we actually really always preferred those names but didn't realise.

I am way too superstitious to name a child before it's born and didn't know the sex either so there was no temptation to name it before it arrived!

We picked our names before they were born but this time I'm doing a shortlist

We were the same, had a name for DC1, a shortlist for DC2. I prefer DC2's name so if there's a 3rd will definately shortlist again!

We picked both DS's and DD's name immediately after the 20 week scan!

I mean, do babies REALLY look like a Max, Alfie or Steve? And what if they look like a Gavin? Or a Nigel?

We had a name both for a girl and boy.
I couldn't have been like some who have no name for the baby for days after - just not me.
