What do you think of Lux?

I love it and so does my DH. We had a family friend that we were very close to called Lux and she died recently and we'd like to use the name but have no idea what other peoples reactions would be. She was the only Lux I'd ever met so I assume it isn't a popular name.

I know it was a character name in Virgin Suicides which doesn't bother me, I like the film. There was a detergent called Lux too, but I doubt many under 20 years old would have ever heard of it now so don't think that would be a problem when baby is older if you see what I mean.

It did make me think "soap"...

Lux is a soap. A very nice smelling soap, but still a soap.

Was it a nn for something else in your friend?

I've always loved this name.

Overmy No, Lux was her full name. Often when we kids she was called Luxie as a nn, but her full name was Lux.

Maybe people will think I just really like the soap, thats fine I guess they will just think I'm really, really clean !

Soap. Don't be ridiculous.

If you want a name with the connotation "light", Lucy for a girl, Christopher for a boy (or Lucius). But not Lux.

I love it, there was an American tv show( not the one you mentioned ) and the girl was called Lux! I think it's lovely!

Didn't know they did shower gel www.amazon.co.uk/Lux-Shower-Heavenly-Milk-250ml/dp/B001RYOSHE?tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21

I don't think I mind it though, in fact, if we have a DD called Lux I would feel duty bound to buy only Lux shower gel!

Maybe this name is like Marmite, some saying its ridiculous and others saying its lovely. To be fair, I didn't think everyone would like it. I'm really glad some have said they like it.

Erm... soap.

Sorry, it's a shame as it would be a pretty name. Bit like Ariel really - lovely name in theory, but will make everyone think of washing powder.

Isn't Lux the unit of measurement for light?

Lux Interior from The Cramps - that's what it makes me think of. He's dead now mind you.

Yeah...I quite like it. Why not?

I do think of soap/shower gel but I like your reasons for choosing it. Maybe a middle name??

Report
Bluestocking · 13/04/2012 09:23

Too soapy for me - and I'm pretty sure Lux soap and Lux soapflakes still exist. The other connotation (for me, but I am ancient) is Lux Interior, who was the lead singer of The Cramps. OP, was your friend a biker? I saw a biker funeral just recently with the name Lux spelled out in flowers on the coffin.

I think it's nice too, and naming her after your friend is a really lovely idea.

I would agree that soap is not an awful connotation anyway! (It's not like it's a brand of herpes medication or similar)

UnderWater, the unit of measurement for light is the lumen!

Isn't there a piece of music called Lux Aeterna or something?

I think younger people probably wouldn't make the soap association, if you're really set on it. I'm 35 though, and it's the first thing that sprang to mind. You'll have to develop a thick skin around outspoken ladies of a certain age!

Blue That made me laugh, the very idea of her on a bike is Shock. Must have been another Lux I think!
Never heard of Lux Interior, will go and google.

TBH, the only people who are going to think 'soap!' are people old enough to have gone shopping for the household soap - so adults, and hopefully they would have enough sense not to go on about it.

Lux is the unit of light, but again I don't think that's a bad shared meaning.

Thanks Blue! I didn't think I was quite right, but I've monitored light in Lux for work before. Found it now.

Sadly, I would always associate a child named Lux with words like centimetre or lightyear. Because I am juvenile!

Reminds me of Lux from The Virgin Suicides (book by Jeffrey Eugenides; film by Sofia Coppola).

I really like it.

For some reason I think of it as a boy's name more than a girls name but I think it would work for either.

It's quirky but not too out there as it is already a familiar word if that makes sense?
