Okay have been lurking quite a while...no offence but the site faves are not here. Slightly confused as to how everyone calls these names new and outside general culture when there are a million of all these names atm...oops :/

Your choices look totally mainstream to me. I'm not sure why you feel that they would raise any eyebrows. Seems a bit of an aggressive way to start off a thread.

? Indeed.

Your names are fine.

Being stereotypical about other names is not.

Unless of course you're trying to start a bunfight? Grin

your names are fine, there are none on there I don't like (tho equally none that I "love".

They aren't particularly unusual, so be sure you don't mind your children having same names as several others in his/her class.

I would avoid Amy, Isabella, Joshua, James and Jack if you don't want your child to be 1 of several in her/his class.

Normal, well know, pleasant names...

Chloe, Amy, Joshua and Jack were all on my list. Why would you get flamed?

Report
tummytickler · 01/04/2012 12:32

Gabriella is absolutely gorgeous. Chloe and Isabella are ok. Not keen on Amy but that is because I went to school with a really awful one.
Joshua, James, Jack and Thomas are lovely. James is my favourite. Classic and lovely nn's

I like Gabriella and James the best Smile

Not sure I understand your post fully though - you are worried that we wont like them because they are not unusual?

Nothing offensive or exciting.

You sound like the main aim is to 'please' mumsetters with your name choice for your children. They are your children and thankfully we all have different tastes. Go for the names YOU love.

The only name I like is Gabriella. But you may not like my choices either - thats ok Smile.

HeidiHole · 01/04/2012 18:21

these all seem like 'normal' names that crop up on here all the time Hmm

Report
spammertime · 01/04/2012 18:35

They would fall into the

b) dull and overused category

I am not being serious by the way, they are all (in my opinion) nice names. Just so you know though, the other categories names fall into are

A) pretentious and try-hard

Or

C) chavvy

Every single name mentioned on here is always given negative feedback for one of those reasons. It shouldn't matter. What matters is that you and your partner like it!

They are fine, not going to set the world alight but nice names. Nice is a good adjective for them.

Chloe: really dislike this.
Amy: like this.
Isabella: too popular.
Gabriella: best of the girls names, but dislike 'gabby' as a nn.

Connor: strongly dislike, the two I know are a real handful.
Joshua: nice.
James: very nice.
Thomas: prefer Tomas (welsh). Subtle differences.
Sean- meh, much prefer Seth.
Jack- really dislike.

They are all perfectly safe and attractive names.
My picks would be:
Isabella and Gabriella
Thomas and James

MeTheMog · 01/04/2012 19:35

Love the boys names except Sean, which is a perfectly splendid name, just not one of my favourites, and Jack.
Love Joshua, James (which we didn't use as my sodding in laws would have called him Jim) and Thomas which would have been my choice for a ds2 which didn't happen.
Not so struck with the girls names and really not fond of Chloe. My trouble with girls' names has always stemmed from the fear that they might grow up to look like me which ruled out Grace, Flora, Tilly, Poppy, Daisy, etc. etc.!!
Love Kitty, Hannah, Eleanor and Niamh though.

I don't think I have ever read a MN poster saying James and Thomas are new and outside general culture, assuming that means not often heard of.

Your choices of names are perfectly mainstream in the 2000s, I know many children with those names. They would not be my choice perhaps for that reason, but if you like them then that's great!

Report
cheesesarnie · 01/04/2012 19:46

i have a james and a thomas and they are only ones of each in school-not why we chose though.so they are common/traditional but getting less used i think.

Report
oikopolis · 01/04/2012 19:53

what an incredibly strange thread OP.

the names on your list are very very normal, not even remotely "new" or "outside general culture" (whatever "general culture" is).

there are always threads on baby name boards where people talk about unusual names approvingly, but that's not a reflection of the naming practices of anyone really. it's simply a function of people who like baby names = people who know & appreciate a lot more names than the average person = unusual names crop up quite a lot...

Chloe -- OK, wouldn't use it in UK because it's v popular
Amy/Aimee - nice
Isabella - nice, very popular
Gabriella - nice

Connor - nice
Joshua - overused in my area but nice in theory
James - lovely
Thomas - ok, nothing wrong with the name but not to my taste for some reason
Sean - lovely
Jack - prefer as a nickname for Jacob or John, but a fine choice in any case
