Alec?

As a nn for Alexander?

Love it/hate it/indifferent?

I'm not pregnant, but in the event that I am at some point, Alexander is DH's very very favorite boys' name. I feel it's too long for everyday, don't like Xander, and Alex is one of the most popular names around here.

Thoughts?

I adore Alec. But just Alec. Not Alexander!

I love Alec - it's my grandpa's name. DH vetoed it though!

I really like the name Alec! It's a stand alone name though isn't it?
It's lovely, and quite uncommon I think...

Alec is a cool old man name (my great uncle Alec is hilarious) but I don't see it as a nn for Alexander... I guess I say Alex-ander not Alec-xander so it's not 'in' there.

I'd think too much of Alec Guinness or Alec Baldwin. Sorry, not helpful is it?

No good unless he's smart.

My great-grandad, grandad and uncle were Alec, short for Alexander.
My Cousin & his son, second cousin & my son are Alex, short for Alexander.
My other uncle and his son are Sandy, short for Alexander.
My other cousin's son is Xand, short for Alexander.

Erm....it's a family tradition Grin

I like Alexander, I'm fairly indifferent to Alec though.

I know an Alec, short for Alexander, but he spells it Alex. I never understood how that works Hmm (surname does NOT begin with S)

I am also hoping to avoid DH, who is a huge Clockwork Orange fan, saying "well well well...well well well, if it isn't little Alex," all the time and giving me the deep-down creeps. Hmm

Also in Alec Baldwin's case it is short for Alexander. :)

Love the name Alec - character in one of my favourite books Smile not keen in Alexander though - am a historian so Alexander the great?? I had to veto many names for their historical connections Grin

Love it! Sandy is also a nn for Alexander if that helps?

Report
janie2 · 30/03/2012 21:08

oops just noticed that Sandy has already been mentioned!

Report
CheerfulYank · 30/03/2012 21:32

Our surname is Brick, so I don't think Sandy is the way forward. :o

I have an Alec who is just Alec. I didn't want Alexander with Alec as a nn because I was worried it would morph into Alex at school etc.

I still love it and so does he (aged 7).

We have an Alec, and have not met another one so far (age 10).

Alexander lends itself to all sorts of shortenings, which I think is a great advantage for any name :) I think that you will get 'little Alex' quotes from your dh though, regardless of which shortening you use (we are also Clockwork Orange fans, and it is eminently quotable).

I have known two Alecs and they were both Alasdairs.

My dad is Alec so I'm biased! His is short for Alexander...want my first DC to be alex after him (because he's an amazing man and father), boy or girl.

Agree Alex is common though, so love Alec!

Alex is nice, but swap the x with a c and I don't like it all.
