Name for baby girl.... Help please!

So I love the name Abigail. We had it on our list for DD1, but went with Eleanor (known as Ellie), and DS 1, but went with Samuel (Sam). Am pregnant with another girl and still love it BUT... We already know an Abigail and so can't really use it. She was born just before DS and sent me into a panic as it had been "our" name. Was v.relieved when a boy appeared! Can't find an alternative I love though. DH really likes Susannah (Susie) but I don't get that "yes" I'm looking for. Am I being daft? Will I fall in love with it because it belongs to my daughter? Can you come up with alternatives to Abigail that will help? Or should I settle for Susannah? Thanks in advance!

How close are you to the friend who had Abigail? Can you explain that it is a name you have always wanted to use? What would the age difference be, and would the two Abigails often be in the same social circles?
I would be tempted to use it still if I loved it that much.

If you love it, use it! When you name your child you don't own the rights to the name within a ten mile radius!

OMG you are my name twin! Grin

I have an Eleanor, nn Ella she would have been Samuel if she were a boy.

DH has always LOVED the name Susie/Susannah but I struggle with having her inevitably called Sue at some stage of her life.

And Abigail is top of my list, along with Lucy (nn lulu) for DC4 due in 7 weeks!

I also have an Alexander nn Xander and William nn Will/s

Have NO boys names as cannot use Sam now I have an Ella, (salmonella!).

If I were you I would mention it with your friend, she may take it as a compliment but don't let it stop you from using it if its the name you love, who knows what will happen in the future, you may grow apart or move away then you have sacrificed a name you love for nothing! Grin

Susannah is cute.

Not over-fond of Abigail tbh.

Naomi is lovely (but I am biased).

Just as I was thinking "sack it, she'll be Abigail" when I get a text saying my Goddaughter's Mum just gave birth and she's Abigail. Definitely out now. Sad Love some of the suggestions you're coming up with. DH won't go for Matilda, though I think it's nice. I adore Rachel, but it's my sister's name & Ellie's middle name already! Beginning to think I shouldn't give it any more thought until baby arrives (June) as am bound to be disappointed if someone else nicks the name we finally settle on! Hoping her middle name will be Joy though. Does that give any help?

You seem to like 3 syllable names - Abigail, Eleanor, Susannah - so I've tried to think of some others along those lines as well as some stylistically similar to those you mentioned.

Adelaide/Adeline ('Addie' instead of 'Abby')
Annabel
Camilla
Caroline
Cecily
Charlotte
Christina
Felicity
Florence
Francesca
Gabrielle ('Gabby' instead of 'Abby')
Georgina
Harriet
Imogen
Jessamy
Juliet
Louisa
Lucinda
Lydia
Matilda
Miranda
Phoebe
Rebecca
Rosamund
Serena
Sophia

If you want another cute nickname (along the lines of Abby and Ellie), consider names that lend themselves to nicknames: Aggie, Cassie, Franny, Izzy, Josie, Katie, Kitty, Lettie, Libby, Lottie, Lou, Millie, Penny, Polly, Rosie, Sadie, Tess, Tessie, Tillie, etc.

For you, I particularly like Eleanor, Samuel, and Felicity; Eleanor, Samuel, and Charlotte; Eleanor, Samuel, and Gabrielle; and Eleanor, Samuel, and Camilla. But Susannah is a great choice and if you love it, use it.

I settled for my middle daughter's name, as it was the only one XH and I could agree on (he loved it, I thought it was "ok" and better than anything else he suggested; he'd already vetoed all my other suggestions)!

For the first few years of her life I couldn't bring myself to use it and called her by a nickname, until at age 5, she started insisting on being called by her proper name and nothing else!

Now (at almost 10) I can't imagine her being called anything different. Her name really suits her and while it still wouldn't be on my list of all-time favourite names, I'm glad we went with that choice. HTH :)
