I think Amalie will be misspelt Amelie. I don't love them but they are both nice enough.

Malin? As in the shipping forecast?

Malin reminds me of marlin, a type of fish.

Amalie is nicer, although people will spell it Amelie. How about Amelia?

Like malin
Amalie looks like misspelt Amelie.and Amelie is bit done to death now

Malin means 'mean' or 'horrible' in French, I think. I don't like it at all.

Amalie is a much nicer continental version of Amelia than Amelie. That bloody film has a lot to answer for.

MerryMarigold · 22/01/2012 15:09

I assume they sound the same though, percy!

(In English, that is)

There is a difference in pronounciation Amalie is Am-ah-lie Amelie is Am-eh-lie the difference is clearer in the shortenings, you cant have Mali as a nn for Amelie and i love the nn Mali :)

i think you'll spend your whole life going MA-lin not Merlin.

Malin autocorrects to 'malign' and has that meaning in French. It's also very like the shipping area. I think it could be a tricky name in UK, much of Europe and anywhere Francophone.

but woolly, in English it's not pron Am-eh-lie (unless you're EXTREMELY affected), it's Am-uh-lie, which I assume the other spelling would also be. Are there no other names which could have Mail as nn?

How would you pronounce Malin? It is pronounced Maw - linn in Sweden/Norway. I like it but am used to it, think Amalie looks like misspelled Amelie.
Do you like Mila?

I hear Malin, I think head.

Well Amalie is a girl for sure and the only Malin I now is a boy, named after a male relative I think, so maybe that's an answer.

I agree re French meaning but that's probably not an issue in UK. After all, Violet is a lovely name but has as pronounced in French has a horrible meaning.

Amalie for sure :) Malin is a fish (marlin) to me. Though if you like Mali, why not just use that? Or Marley.

peggyblackett · 23/01/2012 00:48

I really, really like Malin.

Really dislike Malin - And they both sound like you've tried too hard.

I think there is a boy at our nursery called Malin.I think I prefer Amalie but would be inclined to go with the other spelling. Presumably, a nickname being a nickname, you could go with whtever you wanted anyway?

Why not just Mali? I think that is lovely and could be either sex tooSmile

I think Malin is fantastic.

I love Marit too (Norwegian I think).

Malin isn't necessarily completely negative in French, I would use it to mean cunning more than mean. Asterix, for example, is sometimes described as "un malin", and he's not mean.

Of course, it is very close to le Mâlin, the devil, which I think is more of a problem.

Mali is lovely by itself. And I like Marit too.
