What do people think of this? It's on the list for DD, DH isn't sure but I'm pretty keen! He's worried it's too Germanic (wtf) & harsh.

I like it, but it definitely is Germanic and probably a bit of a Marmite name for that (there are things my DH has vetoed for being too German and he's got a German name!). My friend's mum was called Greta and we always found it a bit exotic and foreign (we weren't the most worldly of kids though!)

My Italian friend has an 18mth old Greta, everyone here was a bit but it makes such a lovely change from Martina/Francesca/Annamaria/Maria+random saint name.

Just don't plait her hair and give her a milk churn.

Gorgeous name, was on our shortlist too (5+ years ago) but decided against it as too Germanic, which is a crazy reason really.

Yes, very Germanic. But it is definately a very old fashioned name in Germany - and not quite granny chic enough to be trendy there any time soon imo.

Also, it is pronounced Greh (long eh sound)-ta in German, whereas I've heard it pronounced as Grett-a in English.

I love it, very chic. Yes it sounds Germanic but those along with the Nordic names make a really nice change to the cutesy sounding names which are popular now.

I love it, OP. My Nanny (as in grandma, not CM) was Margaret, she was Austrian. I'd definitely consider it myself.

Vivi, the English would probably pronounce it Grett-tshen, woudn't they? In German it would be more like Greht (long soft eh) chen (with the ch pronounced like the H in huge, if that makes sense). Hope that makes sense .

Long soft eh? Do you mean Grater like cheese grater? [hmmm] I've heard it prn Gretta and Greeter.

I think I would go for Margaret or Margarita, and keep Greta as a pet name. Then she will have alternatives if she doesn't like Greta herself.

I'm really confused now, I thought we were talking about Greta, not Gretchen. Still not really getting it (in spite of lots of German-speaking ancestors, probably turning in graves!)
