would appreciate opinions please as our baby brains will not think clearly!!

We've named our DD Edie and are still wondering whether to put Edie or Edith on the birth certificate (which we love too but can't see us using very much).

Is there any point in putting a name on there that we may never use? or is it good for her to have the choice of the full name instead of the shortened Edie when she is older?

What are the pros and cons?

Edith. Gives them the option later on. Edith is rather lovely anyway.

Edith definitely. It's lovely and the couple of people I know who have a nn as their proper name (a Betty and a Jenny) both wish their parents had put the full formal name on the birth certificate.

If you put Edie on the BC you've ruled using Edith out ever. Call her Edith and little Edie always has the option to use if it should ever happen to suit a given situation better.

Another vote for the full name. It will give your daughter more choice when she is older. I dislike nicknames on birth certificates and prefer to see the "Sunday name" used.

I'll go against the grain and say Edie. I don't see the point of registering a name and having no intention of using it. Edie isn't a nickname, it's a proper name in my book. Princess, Nipper, etc are nicknames.

Going against the grain, I would go with putting the name you want her to be called on her birth certificate. I rarely use my proper name, and find it hard when applying for jobs etc as some of my certificates are in proper name and some in daily used nickname. Just give her the name she'll be using.

DS is only ever known as Joey but is Joseph officially, as its 'smart' and gives options

But usually schools etc ask what you actually want to call them, so if she stays as Edie, then you can specify that as her "usual" name....

That's my main worry ballstoit. Will we cause her problems with official documents etc if she is known as Edie but has Edith on her certificate then presumably she will have to have Edith on bank accounts etc. can she put a cheque into her bank account with Edie on it rather than Edith?)

IIWY i would use Edith and then let her have the choice! My ds is Wilfred on his BC but we call him Wilf. BTW Edith is the name of Wilfs adopted Grandma so we both thoroughly approve of the name!!!

Edith. My mum goes by her middle name and all her bank accounts only use her middle name. Yes her passport and Driving Licence are in her offical name but that's it. As for certificates it is down to you and her which name she uses at school for exams etc, it doesn't matter what is on the brth certificate

Yeah, no probs re: paying in cheques (if cheques even exist when your Edie is old enough to do her own banking)! My proper name is quite different to the name I use, different initial too (think Elisabeth - Liz) and I've never had problems paying in cheques made out to my short name.
