Baby names

-ie names Shortlist - be as brutal as you like we need some opinions

someRaaRaaplease · 17/10/2011 22:38

We already have a

Cassie Mary and an Artie Edward

So we want a name that has an ie on the end to kind of go with the others and the sound softens our surname a lot.

So our shortlist

Girl

Katie
Allie
Alexie
Effie
Emmie
Andie
Essie

Boy

Jamie
Richie
Alfie
Robbie
Harrie (looks to odd?)
Ollie

What do you think?

I'm one of those irritating people who would advise you to think about putting a traditional full form name on the BC, so your DC has a version that doesn't sound like a nn should she wish it later in life. So with that as my angle, I'm commenting on these as day-to-day names, not the BC ones.

Katie - lovely
Allie - sounds nice, but somehow doesn't look right written
Alexie - no
Effie - maybe
Emmie - OK
Andie - lovely
Essie - no (looks like someone's bitten the head off Nessie)

Jamie - lovely
Richie - OK
Alfie - OK
Robbie - lovely
Harrie - no
Ollie - OK

I like Emmie, Ollie and Robbie but not keen on any of the others, sorry

How about

Hollie
Lucie
Millie

Can't think of any other boys. I will think about it and come back!

Report
Tortington · 17/10/2011 23:19

i think having them sound all the same is really naff
odd
imagine it was you, your borther and your sister aged 30.

its not cute at 30

StetsonsAreCool · 17/10/2011 23:25

I like Stevie, for either.

Janie
Josie
Sophie
Annie

Why can I only think of girls names? Confused

Boys ??

Johnnie
Charlie
Ozzie
Davie (actually, meh)
Gillie (if short for Gilbert)

Sorry, I've not been very helpful after all. All the -ee sounding boys names I like should really end in a -y. Like Rory, Henry, Toby.

Katie - It is alright
Allie - same as others sounds nice but the look???
Alexie - nope
Effie - no
Emmie - it is just about alright
Andie - I like it
Essie - okay

Boy

Jamie - it is alright
Richie - Hapy Days so nope
Alfie - like but very like Archie
Robbie - williams so nope
Harrie (looks to odd?) - yes it does
Ollie - it is our dogs name so no but it is nice

I like Charlie, Josie and Sophie as well.

Ohhh and I think it is nice to have names that end with the same sound/letters. Me and my sibling all have names that begin with the same letter and we really liked it when we where kids and still like it now.

Love Emmie, and like Robbie.

How about Albie, Frankie, Freddie

Esme, Phoebe, Rosalie, Coralie, Aimee, Amelie?

mogandthecat · 18/10/2011 09:23

I only like Katie from your girls list and Jamie from boys.

What about Ailie instead of Allie (should be Eilidh really, but you want an ie)
or Maisie

Like suggestions of Josie and Sophie which manage to end in ie but work well for all ages

DiaryofaSleepDeprivedMum · 18/10/2011 09:52

Emmie or Jamie. That's my opinion for what it's worth!

Your children's names are lovely!

Katie- A bit dull IMO (but Catherine is lovely)
Allie- See above
Alexie- Sayle
Effie- LOVELY. Reminds me of Kate Atkinson's brilliant book, Emotionally Weird.
Emmie- Nice.
Andie- MacDowell and Peters. Nooooo.
Essie- I like it, have never heard it before.

Jamie- I like it
Richie- Brilliant. I love these kinds of names- You don't get little Richards (!) but it's still a known name IYKWIM
Alfie- Nice but there are millions of them
Robbie- See Richie. Brilliant.
Harrie (looks to odd?)- Yes, it's weird, sorry.
Ollie- Bit dull.

You have good taste OP :)

I'm not really keen on your suggestions to add to the two nice names you have already, to be honest!

How about Laurie - for either gender, in fact!

Report
Jawbreaker · 18/10/2011 10:12

I love Cassie Mary, but there has to be a full name that Cassie is a nn for. I dont think its fair to give a girl a twee '-ee' ending name without any alternative.

I feel the same about your other girl's names.

Katie - much prefer Kate short for Catherine
Effie / Emmie - sweet a snicknames but way to cutesy wootesy omn their own
Allie, Alexie - no, too girly
Andie - like it because it reminds me of Molly Ringwald in 'Pretty in Pink', but again, needa a longer version
Essie - awful, sounds like a dog's name and reminds me fo the famous nail varnish brand

Boy's

Again, all too cutesy and what is this obssession with 'ie' endings? Harrie? Really?

Jamie shiort for James fine
Olliew short for Oliver fine

Dislike Richie and Robbie

Alfie is common

You did say be brutal!

Report
ImpYCelyn · 18/10/2011 10:35

Katie - yes
Allie - no
Alexie - definitely not
Effie - yes
Emmie - no
Andie - not keen
Essie - no

Jamie - fine
Richie - no
Alfie - fine
Robbie - no
Harrie (looks to odd?) - looks bizarre, definite no
Ollie - Loads of Ollies around.

Would it be the full name? I much prefer a proper name for at work when older etc.

Report
oohlaalaa · 18/10/2011 11:40

Katie - nice
Allie - I think it should be spelt, Ali, and short for Alison. It looks mispelt/ made up.
Alexie - again, I think should be spelt Alexi, it just looks mispelt/made up.
Effie - really don't like this name. I don't like to put the reasons why, as it could be deemed offensive.
Emmie - love Emilia, with Emmy as a nn.
Andie - I think you've copied Andie MacDowell, and not a real name. Just googled the actress, Andie is her screen name, her real name is Rosalie.
Essie - Awful. Its a cosmetics line.

From above, I only like Katie.

Boy

Jamie - like
Richie - should be short for Richard
Alfie - it's okay.
Robbie - think it should be short for Robert
Harrie (looks to odd?) - very odd
Ollie - should be Oliver.

I think Jamie is the nicest. Katie and Jamie are both nice names.

I don't see why you need all your children's names ending in -ie. Don't get it.

Girl

Katie - great name, especially with the other two.
Allie - yes, I like it.
Alexie - again, I like it.
Effie - no way
Emmie - no
Andie - I'm undecided
Essie - er, no.

Boy

Jamie - I like Jamie but perhaps not with Artie.
Richie - no (I'm too big a fan of Bottom)
Alfie - not with Artie
Robbie - wee boy's name
Harrie (looks to odd?) - yes, looks too odd
Ollie - yes, I like it with your other two.

Suggestions:
What about Lucy/Lucie? And Johnnie?

StetsonsAreCool · 18/10/2011 18:01

I like Laurie too, and Frankie. And they can both be used either way.

Come back OP!

GirlWithALlamaTattoo · 18/10/2011 18:16

I think Allie looks and sounds lovely, but as a nickname. They're all nicknames.

I also disagree with the PP who said Jamie's a strong name. James is a strong name. Jamie's a wet, weedy name that makes me think of a boy who forgot to pack his mother and overcompensates by being gobby.

Report
Yama · 18/10/2011 18:16

Yeah Stetson, I like Laurie too. Would it be Lawrie for a boy?

Ihavewelliesbutitssunny · 18/10/2011 18:25

I'm another one of those people who think that names should have full names iyswim. But on face value

Girl

Katie- I like it but not sure if it goes with your other names
Allie- Really like it
Alexie- Really dislike, doesn't look or sound like a proper name
Effie- As above, also reminds me of effing
Emmie- Really like
Andie- Too much like a boys name for me
Essie- Dislike, doesn't sound or look like a proper name

Boy

Jamie- Like but a bit dated
Richie- Too old-fashioned
Alfie- Like, but too much like Artie
Robbie- Like, goes well with your other names too
Harrie (looks to odd?)- looks too odd and he will spend a lot of time explaining the spelling
Ollie- Like but a bit boring

jaw nope she is just Cassie - it is a family name and so i just cassie. And I don't think having an -ee sounding name when you are a girl is bad (I have an kind of -ee sound at the end of mine actually someone suggested it I've never had a problem (it isn't a -ie)

I like Laurie/Lawrie
Frankie is nice but I don't like Frank
Lucie is okay - not that fussed
Josie I like as well reminds me of that comedian woman

Mmm not fond of this idea, sorry. I love Cassie but think most of the "ie' names need to be nicknames, not given names.

Don't like any of the boys' names tbh but would go for Robert if I had to pick one. Harrie looks frankly ridiculous imho.

Not fond of the girls' names but Katie is okay. Alexie is horrible, sorry, as is Andie.
