Ok so I'm 37 wks pregnant now and we don't know what sex DC is. The whole way through this pregnancy I have loved the name Gabriel for a boy. I've always been a bit concerned about whether this name would caused my child to be teased and I am aware that it is not everyones cup of tea, but I've loved it.
DH now says he also loves it and wants to use it as the first name for our potential DS. But now I can't imagine having a son called Gabriel and it just doesn't sound right. For pete's sake what is wrong with me.
Please reassure me that this is just a wobble and that being called Gabriel is great, especially if you know any Gabriels, young or old :)

I think Gabriel is a name that, had you chosen it in the 1980s or 90s, might have been a cause for teasing (because it starts with 'gay' and sounds a bit like Gabrielle), but now it is so widely used that I don't think there will be a problem. I class it as the same type of name as Theo, Noah, Hugo etc., a bit middle class and not overly common, but people will have heard of it.

It's an excellent name...

It is a lovely name, but I would assume that the baby's birthday was in March or at a push December. However, that is probably because of my convent schooling and I doubt most people would even think about that. So ignore me and pick the name you love best.

It is a lovely choice. Every single name can be teased -e.g. William = Willy, Ellie = Smellie Ellie, with a little (or not that little) imagination.

Gabriel is a lovely name. The only one I have ever known was a truly gorgeous Italian fellow student of DH who I had a massive crush on

Go for it

Gabriel is lovely.

The Gabriel I know is at an inner-city S LOndon school and no one has thought to tease him. I have never assumed he was a Christmas baby - wouldn't even particularly think that of Noel.

If you like it, go for it.

I love the name Gabriel. I know a Gabriel, often shortened to Gabe, and he's lovely.

I think you need to be 100% happy with a name to use it, could you use it for a middle name?

It's a lovely name. I know a 5yo Gabriel (Gabe) and a 23yo (Gabes) and Gabes has never had a problem being teased for it.

I love it-a very strong name with no negative connotations at all.

I love it. I know a little six year old Gabriel and he certainly never gets teased but then he is a little thug.

Lovely name, with the multitude of 'unusual/quirky' names that are about today you've nothing to worry about with regard teasing!

mistressploppy · 10/10/2011 13:12

Gabriel is lovely, you're just getting cold feet because the day is looming closer!

Remember, you don't have to decide straight away anyway. If you've loved it the whole way through so far, that counts for a lot.

Gabriel's fabulous. I've known a few over time - all the adult ones are really quite masculine and bloody gorgeous for some reason and it's not so unusual these days that people would raise an eyebrow. Gabe's a great nickname too.

Wait and see what the baby's like. Even when mine were tiny tiny the 'right' name made sense once we'd met them.

Pancakeflipper · 10/10/2011 13:16

Gabriel is a lovely name.

And I know a 7yr old Gabriel who would never be teased for his name because he also is thug like, just like Rhubarbgarden's...

Wait until you see baby - you will know if it fits. You might end up ditching your chosen name for another when you meet baby. We did.

You're just wobbling because you have pregnancy milk-for-brains. I almost gave my DS the initials SOD because I wasn't thinking straight...Gabriel is beautiful. Just a shame it's not twins - could have had Lucifer too and a right pair ;)

And if it's a girl, Gabby is pretty too.

BikeRunSki · 10/10/2011 13:32

I love it, wanted it for bump, but they tell me bump is a girl.
Big Peter Gabriel fan me.

I had a wobble with my ds's name and dd's when I was in late pregnancy. It is normal.
Go with it anyway and I am sure your ds will 'grow into his name' :)
