Alethea Pronounced Ah-LEE-thee-uh. I think it's pretty, nn Thea. What do we all think...?

Sounds a bit like Alicia with a lisp to me.

I think it's a fantastic name. The one I know in RL is lovely.

lockets DH loves Thea as it stands (as do I), but our surname is also 4 letters 2 syllables, so I'm not sure it sounds quite right!

I love it- it means Truth.

The one I know is lovely- she used to post here quite frequently, but not any more.

My husband has just left me and my two boys for a salsa dancer called Alethea so to me it means "marriage wrecking/family destroying whore with no morals." Don't do it.

Gangle, so sorry to hear that sad

thistlemuncher Mon 10-Oct-11 08:50:32

Love it, but I'm more used to seeing it as Aletheia

bigkidsdidit Mon 10-Oct-11 08:52:18

I love it. Is it ALEEthea or AleTHEEa?

seeker Mon 10-Oct-11 08:54:53

It's lovely - but it's pronounced Al-a-THE-a. It's one of those names like Alicia that are losing their proper pronunciation which is a shame.

SoylentClean Mon 10-Oct-11 09:01:06

I went to school with an Alethea, always thought it was a nice name.

SoylentClean Mon 10-Oct-11 09:02:03

Should have said, she pronounced it 'ah-lee-thee-ah'

bigkidsdidit Mon 10-Oct-11 09:04:54

Seeker how ought Alicia be pronounced?

I love Al-a-THEE-a a lot. A lot!

ripstheirthroatoutliveupstairs Mon 10-Oct-11 09:12:07

I worked with a very posh Al-althee-a. Really lovely name.

anonymousbird Mon 10-Oct-11 09:13:38

It's not A-leee-theee-a. It's as someone else said Al a THEE ah. Two EE sounds in the middle of the name is mighty odd!

We know one, young girl. Never come across the name before.

Nice, slightly unusual name.

Hmmm. I just tried to google a fantastic song by, I think Joni Mitchell called Alathea, but the first few google pages are taken up by a very active Christian ministry with the name. Not sure if this would bother you.

EdithWeston Mon 10-Oct-11 09:32:27

I've only come across it as al-ee-thea, where the father was a pretty erudite Greek scholar.

Is classical Greek like Latin (ie has different "schools" of pronunciation)?

Gorgeous name!

BelleEnd Mon 10-Oct-11 10:37:41

I knew one called Aletea that was pronounced Alisha.

poppydaisy Mon 10-Oct-11 11:06:35

Love it would pronounce it Al-eh-THEE-a. Beautiful name, not overused.

therewasalittlegirl Mon 10-Oct-11 13:14:23

Hmm interesting, thanks ladies. Maybe I prefer it pronounced Al-uh-THEE-a...
