Help me find a name!(14 Posts)
I used up my favourite ever name (Saul) for DS, so now we're having another one I'm at a loss....
Here's the (not so short) list:
Suggestions, comments etc? Thanks!
Benedict - like
Benjamin - not so keen, a bit "wet"
Michael - OK, due a comeback?
Nicholas - like, due a comeback
Otto - don't like
Peter - like, classic and underused
Rex - too canine
Robert - like, classic and underused
Robin - dislike, too unisex and wet
Stuart - OK
Timothy - again, a bit wet
Vita - OK if you're Italian
Erica - OK
Jacqueline - OK
Louisa - like
Petra - dislike
Stella - OK, prefer Estella
Monica - quite like
Maria - quite like
Rebecca - like
Rachel - quite like
Love Otto, friends named their little boy Otto and I wish I could use it! It's really cute, and unusual enough that there won't be a million of them in his peer group but familiar enough that people know the name and won't pull a face or ask how to spell it.
Can't hear the name Stella without thinking of Marlon Brando yelling it in Streetcar Named Desire.
Cereal - TOTALLY agree with you about the wet comments, I'd nearly ditched the same ones for that reason.
Benedict - love it, but would be worried it would be shortened to just Ben.
Benjamin - boring.
Michael - boring.
Nicholas - love it.
Otto - interesting and masculine.
Peter - was tempted for DS, but dislike the nn Pete.
Rex - dogs name.
Robert - boring.
Robin - not a strong name.
Stuart - boring. I imagine a Stuart always having a runny nose. Don't know why.
Timothy - not masculine, especially when he's known as Tim.
Vita - depends on your surname.
Erica - dislike.
Jacqueline - no. 40 years ago maybe.
Louisa - ok.
Petra - Lovely, strong name.
Stella - love it.
Monica - no. suits an adult.
Maria - timeless.
Rebecca - Love it with the Rebekah spelling. (which would complement the name of your DS)
Rachel - nice.
How about Jude or Frances (suitable for a DS of DD), or Rupert? or Astrid for a DD?
Benedict - love it!
Benjamin - not so
Michael - nice but feels dated
Nicholas - getting more popular
Otto - no
Peter - nice but feels dated
Rex - no
Robert - don't like at all
Robin - more of a girls name now???
Stuart - like the name but not the people I've known with it!
Timothy - just sounds wet
Vita - wierdly nice.
Erica - like
Jacqueline 70s (knew one with Ekke as nn)
Louisa - 70s (but nice and a bit dull)
Petra - knew one at school she was slightly odd so no.
Stella - Estella or Celeste are lovely
Monica - Friends!
Maria - nice but boring
Rebecca - just borng
Rachel - boring
Peter means fart in French. I could never get past that. Of the others, I like:
Michael is timeless, but probably quite unusual atm.
Stuart was the name of someone very dear to me, so I love the name.
Robert has lots of variations so is a generous name to give a boy.
Of the girls' names I like Rachel best. Although Monica is nice, and hasn't been overused.
With Saul I like Michael, Nicholas, Robert and Rex for boys, and Louisa and Maria for girls. Along the same lines as Louisa, maybe Eloise?
Benedict - ok,
Benjamin - boring
Michael - love this, but the nn are a bit rubbish
Nicholas - nice
Otto - love Otto. Saul and Otto sound great together
Peter - my favourite. lovely, classic. Wish I hadn't used it as ds's middle name so i could use it!
Rex - ok - bit boring
Robert - really dislike, but like other bert names (Gilbert, Bertram, Albert)
Robin - cute
Stuart - nice, prefer Struan
Timothy - cute
Vita - no
Erica - no, but like Eric for a boy
Jacqueline - no
Louisa - lovely
Petra - no
Stella - no , but trendy
Monica - no
Maria - no, but Maryis nice
Rebecca - lovely
Rachel - boring
Benedict - bit wet
Benjamin - fine, a little uninspiring
Michael - love it
Nicholas - bit wet
Otto - er, no
Peter - love it
Rex - pet/ aging film star, no.
Robert - too plain
Robin - very nice
Stuart - nice but forgettable
Timothy - yuk
Vita - sounds like diet crispbread
Erica - love it
Jacqueline - child of the 60s, I am one
Louisa - child of the 80s
Petra - sounds like an animal charity
Stella - beer
Monica - friends
Maria - not for me
Rebecca - classic, but not my fave
Rachel - classic, but not my fave
I would add Juliet and Patrick to the list.
This is great, thanks everyone.
I like Juliet and Patrick too. Mary was on the list but got bumped just before I posted, maybe I'll reinstate it as a contender....
Struan is getting v popular where I'm from (but not where we live now). Might consider. Not sure it goes with Saul though?
Didn't know about Peter and the fart connection ...but in our family it's probably quite appropriate tbh
Is Stella trendy? We are very untrendy. Not sure we could carry it off.
DH thinks Otto is pretentious?
I think Otto is pretentious too. Sorry.
