Ok, so we're having a baby. Don't know what it is yet. We have had a boy's name down for ages - James - names after loved and deceased family member.

Girls name, however, is impossible. And finally this morning we thought we'd done it - Rose, nn Rosie.

Except that if we have two kids, as planned, and these would be the names, they would then be Rosie and Jim. Like the shitty horrible ugly puppets from when I was a kid. And now that's in my head I can't get it out.

As I write this I feel like a knob for even thinking of it, but it's like Pandora's box.

And yes, we thought about Pandora. And no, it's not happening.

So I need some girls names that go with James. I realise I may never have two kids and this is all ridiculous, but just go with it.

Names we both like in some way but have yet to agree on:

Kirstle Mon 29-Aug-11 11:19:57

I suppose it actually depends on whether you are deffo gonna use the nn Jim for a ds. I dont know any James' that are Jim... smile

Your other names are gorgeous though....
I love Lyra, Bella and Edie.

What about Rosalie or Rosa?
Or perhaps Romilly....?

Good luck and try not to come to blows over it smile

redheadbedhead Mon 29-Aug-11 11:50:56

hey kirstie - tried to get Elowen past OH but he wasn't having any of it!!!

I think Rosalie or Rosa would still get shortened to rosie...both lovely tho. and yes we were thinking of jim as a nn.

it's driving me crazy!!!! i keep thinking there must be a girls name out there somewhere that i haven't thought of yet!!!!

Kirstle Mon 29-Aug-11 13:59:20

It's wrong of me to be secretly pleased you're not using Elowen isn't it . . . lol Hmm, there has to be a name out there, jut perfect!!

You dont like Romilly? nn Romy or Milly

Other than that, I love Thea, Freya, Zoe and Beatrix...

Good luck !! x

racingheart Mon 29-Aug-11 14:04:48

Love Esme, Lyra and Edie. All of them are much prettier names than Rose imo, as Rose is overused. Love James too.

Not keen on Bella as it makes me think of the puppet from Tweenies (before your time?)

Lyra and James.
James and Edie.
Esme and James.

They all sound gorgeous to me.

redheadbedhead Mon 29-Aug-11 14:38:50

Thanks guys. Not sure on Romilly - I always thought it was a boys name, altho I know it's used for both now.

Tweenies - never seen it so I haven't got that association with Bella luckily! The only prob with Bella is we wanted May as a second name, as it's a family name, and Bella May sounds like Bellamy!! So it hasn't passed the test yet...

Freya is out as it's a family dog....grin
Thea is nearly right...
Zoe was considered and ruled out by OH
Beatrix not an option, but Bea might be...

James and Edie is sounding good to me. How does Edie May grab ya?

Meringutan Mon 29-Aug-11 15:20:52

I think James and Edie make a great sibset.

I think you are looking for something quite classic but with a twist. Off the top of my head...

Kitty (can be short for Katherine/Catherine etc.)
Sarah nn Sadie
Susana (Suzie, Suki or Anna)

redheadbedhead Mon 29-Aug-11 15:48:44

Meringutan that's a great set of names. I hadn't thought of some of those, thanks.

I love Greta, but a good friend just named his baby that, so I can't have it! My OH has ruled out Flora even tho I love it, because of the margarine...

Like Juliet and Cora.

Some of the rest are either family dog names (Tessa and Suki) or I'm not that into them (Rhea and Willa)

But you're definitely along the right lines... thanks for the ideas.

I like Edie, Lyra, Esme and Bella as a nn for Isobel (but not on its own). The only one I really don't like is Chloe (dp wanted this for dd1 and I just can't like it; totally irrational I know!).

Meringutan - I just have to tell you about a litte girl I saw in a shop the other day: she shouted 'Mummy come here, come quick. It's a Meringue-a-flam!' I thought she was trying to say orangutan but she'd actually seen a toy flamingo!

Sorry Op for the hijack!

You'll have two boys or two girls don't over think it. If you like the names you will think of them as individuals.

I would name the names you love

redheadbedhead Tue 30-Aug-11 10:23:50

uppity I know, you're right, I am being a twonk. It was just one of those frustrating conversations where you think you've FINALLY come to a decision, and then something puts you off...

Eloise.... that's a very good one... it's been sanctioned by the OH and added to the longlist, thanks Remus

Lara, Rachel, Elsa also very nice. Elsie springs to mind now too. Thanks everyone. Keep em coming!

HappyAsASandboy Tue 30-Aug-11 11:36:05

Would Edie be short for Edith? If so, I think it's lively (and my Grandma's name/nn smile). If just Edie on it's own, I like it less as it seems like a nn to me.

Beatrice (nn Bea)

Good luck! Though I agree that Rosie and Jim would bother me. I met a Charlotte and Lola a few months ago, and I still smile about it sometimes!

redheadbedhead Tue 30-Aug-11 14:20:31

I love Elodie and Harriet (more the nn Hattie, and same with Bea and Edie, like the nickname more than the real) but OH isn't keen. Damn him!!!

Insomnia11 Tue 30-Aug-11 14:23:38

I loved Rosie & Jim.

Rose is a lovely middle name.

Hassled Tue 30-Aug-11 14:26:44

Lyra is a bit too Philip Pullman for me. Ivy too old ladyish, Chloe too popular (although I'm thinking older children - might be quite rare these days). I love Esme and Edie though.

BikeRunSki Tue 30-Aug-11 14:31:47

Could James (assuming you ever have a DS) not just be James, or Jamie?

thereisalightanditnevergoesout Tue 30-Aug-11 15:13:31

James is a family name on DH's side, but I couldn't face yet another so we opted for 2 other boys' names. Our girls are Romilly and Nancy, but I also loved Tess (yes, family dog's name here too grin), but I loved Betty/Betsy.

HalfPastSeven Tue 30-Aug-11 16:39:22

Other flower names?

etc etc

I always think of Lucy as a similar type of name to Rosie (maybe becuase I know sisters called Lucy and Rosie). Other Rose I know (who is very much ROse not Rosie) has a sister called Honor.

I know a fes boys called James. They have sisters called Rachael, Isobel, Grace, Anna/Annie.

redheadbedhead Tue 30-Aug-11 16:39:24

Love Nancy, but it's a long-standing friend of mine who I don't really want to name it after, so that's out. I'm also with you on Betty/Betsy thereisalight, we've got similar tastes! Do you mind telling me what your boys names are? We still have the option of having James as a middle name (at the moment it might be Milo or Barnaby)

I was shocked that Chloe was popular now, never realised! But then I saw it on the top names lists angry grrr

Still loving Eloise...

SherlockHolmes Tue 30-Aug-11 16:42:12

Why not shorten James to Jamie, rather than Jim? I think when babies are small you do tend to slap an "ee" sound on the end anyway. And also, who's to say you'll have 1 boy and 1 girl, and that you won't change your mind re names by then. Stick with the name you like and worry about the other one if and when it happens.
