Baby names

Awkward OHs!

I know this is completely subjective, but what are the worst names that your partners/parents/in laws have come up with? My DH has come up with the names Hero, Aspen and Ryder (all for boys Shock) whilst my MIL suggested we should call our DD Eugenie (and yes, she did say after the princess).

Also what names that you love have been completely ruled out by OHs? I absolutely love the name Constantine but my DH was having none of it! I know this is probably a conversation that he will be having with mates down the pub himself, but I think it would be interesting to see what others have to come up with!

DH has suggested, and I vetoed without question:

Thomasin (I know one, but not very well, see her often and seemed to weird)
Morwenna (Stupid Peppa Pig voice over, and we are not Welsh!)

In return, he did the same to:
Evelyn (too old fashioned)
Lorellei (never heard of it, made up. he is not very well read).

We have however now chosen a name.

I know, imagine the bullying if I called him Constantine, but I absolutely love it!

My OH just suggested Mabel. Oh dear..

DH has only suggested one name... and then announced last week he had gone off that. He then came out with the classic "I don't like names".

Helpful!!!!

I vetoed the name Rebecca. I like it but don't love it. He vetoed Oliver, think women tend to like it more than men. He also vetoed Clarissa, just didn't like it and Gabriel, no way he said, again think it is a man thing.

My DH suggested Ford or Judge for a boy, thankfully had 2 DDs so haven't had to have that argument discussion!

He vetoed Amber for DD2, still love it but I think she does suit the name she ended up with better.

Ford or Judge. Those are just plain wrong.
DHs greatest desire was that DD was called Trinity. She isn't. MiL suggested Mary, she isn't.
DH really didn't want DD to be called Lydia, he said it was too posh and too thin.

Report
muminthemiddle · 29/08/2011 11:18

I am loving Lydia being too posh and too thin, it is dd's middle name. We do know another Lydia and she is infact very thin (would pass as a much younger child) and infact as she attends a very select private school I guess you could say she is posh too!!!!!!
As a matter of interest what name would your dh class as too fat and too poor?

Meringutan · 29/08/2011 15:06

My DH doesn't come up with his own names...he just vetoes mine lol.

Over the years he has said no to many, many names - with hindsight some justifiably so.

For last dd he vetoed Tabitha which I still love. I honestly can't see his problem.

If we had a son then Dh wanted to call him Shackleton. Luckily we had 4 dds

Psammead · 29/08/2011 16:46

DH came up with Ronja.

My dad came up with Lola, which is ok, but we have a cat called Charlie...

Mother won the prize with Chantelle. This was suggested after I announced DD's name.

muminthemiddle he would consider something like Tyler or Taylor or any profession name to be too fat and too poor. Goodness knows why, we are hardly landed gentry ourselves.

onlyaname · 29/08/2011 21:07

If we have a DS in the future DH would like to call him Huckleberry! That or Arthur. I'm not keen on either.

Report
muminthemiddle · 29/08/2011 21:57

ripstheirthroatout wow- I actually know a rather large boy called Tyler!!!! However he is not poor, his dad owns a successful company. I don't actually know any Taylors but think your dh might be onto something. x

DH vetoed Tabitha and Flora, Wilfred and Arthur. (DS2 would have been a brilliant Wilf)
He didn't have any outlandish suggestions.
His mother dropped heavy hints about always wishing for a girl called Chelsea (no offense to anyone called Chelsea, but it's really not my cup of tea!)
I would have loved to have a Mabel, but vetoed it myself because DH's Yorkshire accent wouldn't have done it justice.

Candice I just laughed out loud at that! Shackleton?!?!

My Dp wanted Frank for a boy and Bellina for a girl (after the chicken in Return To Oz. Obviously)

I've had some classics from my DP who ALWAYS says no to my suggestions (even if he said it as a suggestion a few weeks ago!). These include-
Kelvin
Derrick
Timothy
Kevin
Clay
Michael (after his dad, even though the week before he said he didn't want to use Michael as DS' middle name because he'd then have his Dad's name!)
I really don't get him sometimes.

Report

Well he said no to

Big Bird - or anything connected with it
Jim - he wouldn't even give me James

For our girls he wouldn't have:

Jenny - told me to stop being so left-wing
Rosa - but got that as a mn
Enya
Bryony - said he didn't want a bot called Brian
Jessica
Michelle
Lara
Kate
Kit
Miranda
Zoe
Maya
Amelia

Don't know why I married him :P
