Baby names

3 weeks - ahh. So what do you think of these names??

toomuchpurple · 27/08/2011 16:10

Well given that DC is expected in 3 short weeks we figured that we actually might have to get our skates on and start thinking seriously about names.

Surname is 2 syl and ends with an -in.

Boys

Fin
Emyr
Ross
Enzo
Siôn
Iestyn
Iolo
Davi
Gethin

Girls

Manon
Lowri
Eleri
Erin
Ffion
Lorelai
Adana
Sara
Nia
Mari

So we need a first name and a mn.

Any ideas???

Thanks

Out of your choices, I like these combinations... I haven't put in any first names ending with in, as it may not sound good with your surname - but you'll know. Middle names aren't often used, just for filling in forms, etc., so you have more freedom with those. BTW - check initials in case they spell something undesirable.

Iolo Davi

Iolo Gethin

Davi Ross

Enzo Davi

Lowri Erin

Lorelai Erin

Ffion Sara

Mari Ffion

Adana Ffion

Adana Lowri

For a girl I really like Adana with either Eleri or Lowri.

For a boy I really like Emyr or Davi with either Siôn or Ross.

Sara Mari for a girl, Davi Ross for a boy :)

Fin - wouldn't use first name ending in "in" with your surname
Emyr - too similar to girls' name Emma
Ross - good choice, would fit with your surname
Enzo - not keen
Siôn - not keen
Iestyn - like but wouldn't use "yn" ending with your surname
Iolo - OK
Davi - like
Gethin - again, wouldn't use first name ending in "in" with your surname

Manon - OK
Lowri - Turner
Eleri - OK
Erin - wouldn't use first name ending in "in" with your surname
Ffion - Hague
Lorelai - don't like
Adana - OK
Sara - like
Nia - like
Mari - like

Thanks for all your opinions it's really helpful (and keep them coming)

greenzebra We don't know that is the poblem. We want something welsh (either name/or both) but I have very very welshy name and found that it is very unusual even with welsh speakers and people would pronounce it wrong/think it was made up/or anglasise it. (DH has a simple welsh names that is very well known so he never had that problem) So apart from that we are very very stuck. And I like Iolo as well (and the rest of them)

Well Emyr is on our list so that one obviously. Iolo is my bro's name so that is obviously a great name. Sion I have always loved but if you don't live in wales would pronounciation be a problem. Davi I like but I would always think of as a nn for David

Ffion makes me think of little girls (prob because I have met one as an adult). I like Sara and Mari and Eleri though

I'm American but lived in the UK for many years and tbh I can't pronounce most of your names so can't comment on them! If it bothers you (that some people won't pronounce it right the first time) it might be something to keep in mind though. I think Lorelai a very pretty name.

Really Southern most?!?!
Granted I am welsh but as welsh names go they are pretty simple

Most are as they are written

Emyr - like Em-ur/
Siôn - Basically like Shawn (I've known it to be said Shon)
Iestyn - Like Yes-tin
Iolo - like Yoh-lo/Yo-lo
Davi - like Dav-ee
Gethin - as written Geth-in
Manon - as written Man-on
Lowri - like Loe-ri
Eleri - as written Eh-leh-ree
Erin - as written
Ffion - Fee-on like it is written
Sara - Sah-ra
Nia - Nee-a
Mari - like Marry

There we go - hope that help Southern

What about Dewi?

Report
SouthernFriedTofu · 29/08/2011 23:30

Sorry Blush I really couldn't. I never know what sounds like it is spelled with Welsh either so assumed the pronounciation was further off from what I might have guessed! Just thought you should be warned though that you will find some (possibly many?) people outside Wales might struggle a bit

With your guide in my mind I think most of your names are lovely but especially like:

Siôn - Basically like Shawn (I've known it to be said Shon)
Davi - like Dav-ee
Gethin - as written Geth-in
Lowri - like Loe-ri
Eleri - as written Eh-leh-ree
Erin - as written
Sara - Sah-ra
Nia - Nee-a

btw I'm not implying you shouldn't pick a name that is difficult for some to pronounce, just warning you in case you didn't realise some may be a bit hard in case you would prefer to have something simpler. My dd has a name from a very well known charcter in a (currently) very famous book. But no one is actually called that in rl from what I can tell... and I was suprised to find just about no one can pronounce it!

Thank you all very much.

Dewi unfortunatly reminds me of PE teachers. But DH though a spanner in the works with Dafydd (technically we could use Davi/Dafy as a nn)
So with all your input we have settle for 3 options for each and see what he/she looks like

Iolo Dafydd
Emyr Sion
Dafydd Ross

Sara Mari/Mari Sara
Nia Adana
Lorelai Erin

So thank you all very much. Now we wait.

I like Fin and Ross for a boy and Eleri, Erin, Ffion and Mari for a girl x

For a girl I like:

Eleri Nia best.

Like:

Lowri
Eleri
and
Nia

Probably Nia as a middle name.

Not sure I know how to pronounce Lowri, is it like the painter? It means Laurel, which is beautiful but I think Eleri Nia would be my favourite.

Oh, lovely names, I wish I had a Welsh connection so I could use some of these!

My tuppeny worth as a non-Welsh speaker:

Boys

Fin - nice but very popular
Emyr - lovely
Ross - nice
Enzo - ok. Seems Italian to me rather than Welsh
Siôn - will probably be mispronounced
Iestyn - will probably be mispronounced/stumbled over
Iolo - nice
Davi - nice
Gethin - lovely

Favourites are Emyr and Gethin - both different but still easily pronounced.

Girls

Manon - lovely, though I associate it with the ballet
Lowri - not so keen
Eleri - beautiful
Erin - lovely
Ffion - ok. Ffion Hague.
Lorelai - nice, but isn't it German rather than Welsh?
Adana - ok
Sara - pretty, out of fashion but deserves a comeback
Nia - nice, though people will think she is called Mia
Mari - nice, but will probably be pronounced Mary in England
