Mentioned this name to my Mother who started going on about being unlucky on a boat. What do you guys think?

It's my all time favourite boys name but DH wouldn't let me call DS that it as it's his friends name. Very jealous of anyone who gets to use it.

It's OK although I prefer several of the other Biblical names starting with J, such as Joshua, John, Josiah, James.

It was my favourite name but DH vetoed it because of the whole whale thing. I did point out that nobody goes on about arks to Noahs any more, but he wasn't having it.

I have to add, however, that when I subsequently mentioned it to my Dad (having named both of our DSs something else), he started going on about people being known as "a right Jonah" in his youth, although he didn't appear to be able to exactly explain what it meant.

Still love the name though, hope you can use it!

I think 'being a Jonah' refers to being bad luck. Have you ever seen the film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World?
A character in that is referred to as a 'Jonah', they believe he brings bad luck to the crew. He eventually commits suicide because of it.

I love it. And I reckon the unlucky thing is stupid, because whats luckier than get swallowed by a whale and NOT dying? Pretty bloody lucky if you ask me.

I was going to use Jonah if this little one was a boy! My favourite name Grin. Also got told about the "bad luck" thing etc.
I believe it also means "Dove" though :)

Lovely lovely name.

Top of my list for (imaginary) DC3 if it's a boy!

beetrickspotter,
if someone was called a Jonah it meant they were unlucky and brought bad luck to others.
I like the name though, and I know in Denmark the Danish equivilent Jonas is popular.

I love the name Jonah, DP said it reminds him of the Jonas Brothers so I'm not allowed to use it, ever. Angry

It makes me think of this guy - Jonah Falcon - the man with the worlds biggest penis. Blush Not the worst association for a boy to have I guess, but a lot to live up to!!

Great name - the kind of name you have to say in a deep voice - very manly. Nice meaning too - dove. The only reason we haven't gone for it is because he was a cowardly prophet.

This was the name I wanted to use for DS2 but in the end couldn't because of the bad luck meaning of being 'a Jonah'. Later, distant relatives commented it was lucky we didn't call him Jonah because they couldn't have ever let him on their fishing boat (they weren't exactly joking either).

Sadly it does have bad luck connotations to quite a few people but is becoming more used and therefore acceptable.
I still love it and have never liked the name we used instead!

I love this name!

DS1 has a Biblical name and if I ever have a DS2 I've always dreamt of calling him either Jonah or Joel. Stuck between the two, but they are two lovely names to be stuck between :)

I've never in my life heard that about not going on a sailing or fishing boat Confused

Sure Jonah in the Bible ended up inside a whale, but got saved and got out again to tell the tale. Surely that's a good thing, not a bad thing?!

It's a lovely name! Wanted it for DS2, DH not keen. Changed his mind by the time DS3 came along and it was top of the list, but then he was an absolute whopper (over 10lb) and we decided we couldn't then give him a name with whale associations

Anyway, DS3 is now Laurie, which I really love - but still love Jonah!
